Should Penn State extend Paterno's contract?

Paterno's contract expires at the end of the current season.

The Penn State Athletic Director requested that Paterno retire back in 2004.

Should they extend his contract or request again that he retire?

In Penn State's favor, Paterno's current contract is on the low side.

He should be able to coach as long as he wants to.

I had wondered about his abilities a couple of years ago, but its fairly obvious he's still got it (or at least his assistants do).

Ditto that. He should go out when he wants to, and it isn't as if PSU is fading. People go there to play for him I'm sure, so it would actually hurt the W/L anyway I think. I think they have a great chance at the national title game this year. Maybe if he won it all he would retire, but I doubt it. Go Joe!

Re: Should Penn State extend Paterno's contract?

Paterno should have a five year contract that automatically adds a year every offseason. The university owes him a lot for all he's done for them, and he's proven he can still field a very good team. As long as Penn State is winning, the AD won't have much choice in whether Paterno sticks around.

Re: Should Penn State extend Paterno's contract?

I think the National title talk we've heard from Penn ST lately is very premature. I dont think they are that great, and if anything they will be successful thanks to another weak Big 11.

But to get back on subject, they should let him coach as long as he wants, just dont name a successor until he's gone or until is official that he wont be back.

Another Big 11 program where lots of off the field trouble has not fallen down on the head coach.

I would agree in large part it would be due to the weak Big 10, but who's going to beat them?

Ok, so I just checked the schedule and they are at OSU and Wisconsin. Both winnable, but it might be tough. I still see them in a January bowl. I hope they run the table.

He should have a lifetime contract where he coaches until he doesn't want to anymore or is unable to coach.

Paterno and Bowden are in sickening game of chicken.

Iowa may need a coach next season....Paterno may be available.

ESPN - Has Penn State's on-field progress led to off-field problems?

Since 2002, 46 Penn State football players have faced 163 criminal charges, according to an ESPN analysis of Pennsylvania court records and reports. Twenty-seven players have been convicted of or have pleaded guilty to a combined 45 counts.
