    non-call during the USC/OSU game

Why was there no personal foul call on the place where the running backs helmet was ripped off? I mean they changed the facemask rule this year so that they are all 15yd penalties. so there's no accidental face mask and what not.

during the replay, it seemed pretty clear that his helmet was literally ripped on his head. you could see his head snap back and the guys hand was on the facemask.

Re: non-call during the USC/OSU game

It was a pretty quick play. I don't think the guy ever grabbed the facemask either. Combine that with the fact that kid is about 5 foot nothin, and there were a ton of giants around him, I'd guess nobody really saw what happenened.

Question on the horse-collar penalty. Dont' you have to grab the neck area of the shoulder pads for it to be a horse-collar? I thought one of the calls against USC last night looked like the guy just grabbed the jersey , and not even all that high?

Is pulling a guy down from behind enough to call that penalty?

I have a feeling that will be a short-lived rule change.

This is exactly what all of us at the game were asking as well. The best part was that he didn't go down and kept running. He probably would have gained 5-10 yards if the refs hadn't blown the whistle.

Did they blow the whistle because they "thought" his knee touched? Or because he lost his helmet?

I agree ... I don't think he grabbed the facemask at all.

    That's what I thought.

But the announcers made it seem like it was blown dead because they thought his knee touched.

I believe this is the rule:
All players are prohibited from grabbing the inside back collar of the shoulder pads or jersey, or the inside collar of the side of the shoulder pads or jersey, and immediately pulling the runner down. This does not apply to a runner who is inside the tackle box or to a quarterback who is in the pocket.

This might be the worst rule in all of organized sport. FWIW, both horse-collar (or I like to say, horse-****) calls appeared to me that the USC defender grabbed the OSU player pretty much between the numbers and yanked him down.

The next time someone is injured because they are dragged down by the collar of their jersey/pads will be the first. Why don't they make it 2-hand touch below the waist or just play flag football? That way, no one will get hurt. Except for the non-contact knee and ankle injuries. I know, let's just ban football altogether because someone MIGHT get hurt during a game. Oh, the horror.

The horse collar tackle looks alot more violent than it is.

so, this makes it seem that even if you don't grab inside the shoulder pads, but inside the jersey, it can still be a horse collar. However, so long as the jersey is used for the tackle but not the actual collar of the shirt...then it is legal. ? correct?

Only good thing about BM is when I am done, flush the toilet and washed my hands. BM is the worst in the business in my opinion. My wife thinks the same about John Madden, oh well.

About helmets coming off. A couple of years ago didn't college switch to new safer helmets? Does it seem like there are a lot of helmets flying off this year or is it me? If so, why?

P.s. I regret going to bed mid 3rd qtr as I thought USC was going to hammer them. However, in that first half, I enjoyed watching some terrific execution on offense... The blocking of the O-line looked good, in part, to a really quick back. Anyway, it was fun to watch.
