    Top Kindergartener? Really?

I just saw on ESPN that they have named the top kindergartener in basketball. There was a big Outside The Lines story on him, calling him the YouTube baby because there are 36 highlight tapes of him on YouTube. I think his name was Marquise Walker if I remember right.... Does anybody think this is going a little far or not?

If he is in Kindergarten and he is 8, there is no way he is getting to college by age 35.

    Re: Top Kindergartener? Really?

In my experience there is some natural advantage that the kid has now, which is great. There's a lot that young children can learn from sports; discipline, focus, rule structure, etc. The issue is that when a kid has so much pressure put on him to concentrate on only one thing, they tend to get burned out on it. There's got to be a lot of love for that sport to maintain that level of interest. At some point other kids are going to mature and become skilled to the point where that natural ability may not be enough to maintain that level of dominance anymore. Then what? Some of those expectations turn into disappointment which is only going to make it more difficult for that child to stay interested. Kindergarten seems WAY to young to be paying attention too. I still can't believe colleges are extending offers to high school freshmen. A lot can change in four years, mentally and physically. At his age it's really nothing more than a novelty.

    Re: Top Kindergartener? Really?

If the Cyclones aren't in on this kid now, it is probably too late. They should have started the recruiting process during the first year of preschool. They say that Venture Academy Preschool is turning into a regular basketball factory. Maybe McDermott should try to hire an assistant out of Venture to help with the pipeline. Just my thoughts.
