    Company Car Policies

I'm looking for some feedback as to what some of your companies have as policies for company cars. It seems that some provide a car, pay all maintenance, and fuel and then imput value to you at 4.5 or 5.5 cents per mile. Some provide the car but you provide the gas and then get reimbursed for "company miles." Some companies provide a monthly allowance only with no reimbursement, and yet others provide the fuel.

What are your companies doing for cars or car allowances?

My company is making me drive my own car. They also provide me with no money for gas.

I drive my car to and from work and pay all the gas. Plus no raise when gas prices jump, I'm getting screwed!

    Re: Company Car Policies

I use my own car but get $.585 per mile. There are 2 company cars, but it's too much of a pain if I have to run out to try to find out if someone else is going to be using it that day and what have you.

I had that problem when I worked at the hospital. The IT cars were always being used and noone would write their name down when the checked them out.

    Re: Company Car Policies

I have a company car. I get $75 deducted from pay every 2 weeks. Everything else is taken care of....maintenance, gas, insurance all completely covered (via gas card, etc....don't have to fill out an expense form).

Get a new car every 24months.

Spouse and children of age can drive the car as well.

    Pretty good deal.

    Re: Company Car Policies

My company pays for all the gas and maintenance and I have 16.5 cents per personal mile deducted from my expense account. This basically calculates out to me paying for the gas on the personal miles, plus 4 cents per mile for maintenance. I figure the gas costs about 12.5 cents per mile at 30 mpg.

    Re: Company Car Policies

I don't have a company car but my brother gets a new one every 2 years. He gets to pick what he wants. They pay for his car, insurance, gas, maintenence, etc. It doesn't matter if he drives his car to Florida, they pay.

    I wouldn't mind that job

I pay all my own, and receive no reimbursement for business travel. I cover all repairs and expenses.

    Re: Company Car Policies

My company provides the car and the gas and maintenance is directly billed which is handled by a 3rd party.

I must estimate my personal miles every month, which effects my taxable income at the end of the year. Basically worked out to cost me about $300 last year.

    Re: Company Car Policies

How many of you have to pay for parking every day. I got lucky at this job, they put 10 bucks on each paycheck to help offset parking costs, but being in IT and having to be mobile I get to park in the free lot. Otherwise the ramps nearby would be 30+ a month.

I've always wondered how this works exactly. My former boss had a company car, with all the same perks as your brother. And I never understood how he wasn't taxed on this. If I win a car, or am just flat out given one, I have to pay income tax on it's value. This is even a sweeter deal in the fact that insurance, gas, everything is covered. How is that not considered income any more than a car I haven't sold and made money on yet.

Just in case you don't know, I'm not a tax attorney!

    Re: Company Car Policies

My company provides a truck but it has to be parked at the office each night. Unless my morning job is closer to my house than the office or I am working somewhere where I have to stay over night. It all has something to do if it is a benefit to the employee then the insurance and taxes are different like some have stated above. It's not a bad policy but really stinks when my house is closer than office at the end of a long day.
