Re: Drive off gas theft laws

Customers are forced to prepay, so for someone to pump and drive off without paying the attendant would have to turn on their pump prior to receiving payment, making it their fault for not following the rules. I.E. tough cookies.

You must waste a lot of gas driving around trying to find one.

Who doesn't have a debit card at this point?

It's amazing how this new "law" could be applied to so many things. Great precedent!

    Not good.

More prepay = fewer drive offs = lower gas prices for the rest of us and more time for the police to focus on other crimes. What's the problem?

Re: Drive off gas theft laws

Having worked at a gas station that wasnt prepay, I can safely say that prepay for gas stations anyways, is a great thing! Nothing worse than being caught in a huge rush only glance out at pump 8(the hardest one to see) and see that the vehicle with a 50 dollar charge waiting is no where to be seen and knowing the trouble you're going to be in and the potential money you're going to lose.

I can't stand it when I run across an ancient gas pump that doesn't accept credit cards. I ran into one in Kentucky. Inside they even used the old credit card machine where you get the carbon copy. I didn't know those still existed.

I can't even begin to imagine what they're paying for interchange on those transactions Those carbon receipt things are inherently much less secure than the swipe terminals that are most commonly used now.

Most debit cards will work with machines that take mastercard or visa - most of them also have access to those networks.

There are still some (very, very few) "atm-only" cards in existence, but I think most people will get a debit card if given the choice.

Good point, on that note why have laws that say you have to pay for merchandise period?

debit cards =/= atm cards, that's why I said "debit cards".
