Why Not Go For 2 ?

Sorry if this topic has already been beat into the ground on here, but since I just got back from Vegas let me throw it out there again.

Seems to me like the scenario was perfect to go for 2 and the W at the end of the game the other night.
    - 13 straight road L's
    - There is no way we deserved to be in a position to be that close to a W (see the first half)
    - Just put together our best offensive drive of the year
    - UNLV was back on their heels
    - Pro ISU crowd was going nuts

I know you guys are going to tell me that ISU outplayed UNLV in the second half and that when things are rolling that well that you don't want to do anything stupid and cost your team the game, but its gotta be up there for debate.

I thought that too. But if we go for 2 and don't convert and lose the game, people would have been calling for Chiz to be fired for the most boneheaded play ever.

    1. no time outs... need a GREAT play to be called.
    2. take your 2nd half momentum to OT
    3. continue to make plays on offense.

IMO, there isn't a good reason to take 2 in that situation.

I thought the same thing and everyone around me told me that you had to kick and take it to overtime. I see both sides of the argument here but I still would have thought long and hard about going for 2 there for all the reasons you listed.

Re: Why Not Go For 2 ?

If it were NFL, I would say yes...college is different though. Because it's not sudden death, I say take the extra point. Why take a risk. We had momentum, we could have carried it into overtime, but blew our coverage.

Now if we went for 2 and got it, we'd be talking about how it was a brilliant call. Just depends on how it turns out really...Even though we lost, I still think it's the right call.

I wanted to go for 2. Then I realized we are Iowa State and don't do cool stuff like that.

The second we scored I figured Chizik would go for 2, and was kind of surprised he didn't, for the reasons you posted.

Bottom line remains the same, that game was lost in the first half!

I agree with all these points. You can't compare it to the Broncos situation either since we all know the NFL overtime just comes down to a coin toss...

Hindsight is 20/20 and each game/season is independent of another, but our overtime record is like 1-6 now since they started doing overtime in 1996.

Maybe going for two would have been a wise choice.

Re: Why Not Go For 2 ?

If we had somehow gotten to that point against a team such as USC, roll the dice and go for 2. When you have a more talented squad, take your chances in OT.

Unfortunately, part of the reason that we appeared to have taken over the game is that UNLV played it safe when they got out to a big lead. When they opened it back up, they were still very dangerous.

Don't agree. The game was lost in the overtime - offense could not advance the ball, the defense gave up a TD on the first play. The terrible first half was over, the score was in reality 0-0, and we supposedly had the momentum and confidence going into OT.

Red Zone woes, we arent confident inside the 20 right now, thats why we put it into overtime.

Yeah I AGREE Completely...I told the boys on the golf course this morning that I would have went for 2...because with our record in overtime games, I know for sure we're gonna figure out a way to LOSE!!!

Exactly, thus you go for 2! Roll the dice man. On the road, after a big comeback, call Arnaud's favorite short yardage play. It is Vegas, if you are not going to gamble there, where the heck are you going to gamble?

On the road, go for 2 and the win. It really is that simple.

Re: Why Not Go For 2 ?

UNLV stacked us up on the goal line 3 plays in a row on the drive before. on a 2 point conversion you get one shot.

I was dissapointed in the play calling one 2nd and 3rd down of our overtime drive, we really needed to get that first down.
