    Car Navigation System Updating

Noticed that the Navigation system is a little outdated. Looking to get a more current Navigation system for a 2001 Lexus. Do stores sell anything like this? Would Lexus sell anything to update their navigation system? Thanks in advance.

Most of these systems operate using a DVD, from what I understand. You can simply get a new DVD for your system, replace the old one and you're all set.

Lexus will have an update but I have heard charges anywhere from $300 to $700 to update the maps in vehicles. Hopefully I heard wrong, but I was looking at vehicles with navigation in them when we bought our last Odyssey and know the salesman pretty well. He told me that I was better off buying a Garmin or other GPS unit because the updates are so expensive. So I got a garmin 330 for $124 and paid $69 for a update a year after I bought it.

    Good luck.

How much do maps change? Is it mostly points of interests or what?

Most updates include more roads, especially residential and things like that. The nav in my Murano is from like 4-5 years ago and it's funny all the fast food restaurants it says are close by that have long been shut down.

But they charge a pretty penny for updated maps, when I looked last to get an updated map for my Murano it was atleast $200 or more.

Realistically, how many years would you wait to consider it worth the upgrade? When looking at cars, I look at getting a built in nav system because I like things integrated more than I do having things I have to plug in and mount around the car.

Like I say, mines atleast 3 or 4 years old and it works just fine. If you start wanting directions to specific places, restaurants, gas stations etc. that's when you start getting trouble. If you're just trying to get from Ames to Mason City for instance and need directions you'd be fine.

I would guess that you can get 4-5 years out of a DVD easy, but if you're anal about wanting your GPS to know every hotspot then you may want it earlier.

I agree with the 4-5 years. A lot depends on where you live and how you use it. If you use it more for just navigating than you can wait a longtime but if you want a map with updated restaurants and businesses than you'll have to change more often.

    Get on I-35. Drive South.

    Who needs a GPS system?

EDIT -- Whoops...I meant drive North. Guess I need a GPS system.

It looks like a different kind of GPS unit would be better, don't know if we would use it a lot so I don't want to spend that kind of money on updating what it already has.

Probably points of interest would be the most that changed. But when we were looking at the map, it doesn't even have our address or neighborhood on the map, it looks like we live in the middle of a cornfield or something. But used it in Saint Paul and everything seemed good as far as roads.

I dont care about POI. Honestly I just like spoken directions that will get me to my point B. So maybe I would be able to make the GPS system worth it.

Admit it, you're a lonely man that likes to hear a woman's voice as you drive to the movies alone.

I would definitely check with Lexus before you decide to buy another unit though in case the numbers I gave are outdated, not for your brand or manufacturer, or bad information. Our neighborhood in Waukee wasn't on ours when we bought it and that was really the only reason why I got the update, because it works good otherwise.

Funny how even the updates are not correct. Just in Waukee alone, Fareway is west of the new Caseys instead of where it actually is and there is a road showing on the map that is nothing but a grass lot.
