    Re: Pros/Cons Entertainment in Iowa

Is it fair (or even accurate) to lump the entire state together for such a topic? I know based on living in different parts of the state, I'd give a totally different speech depending on location.

For example: when I lived in Mason City, it was a struggle some weekends to find entertainment options. However, living in Des Moines, I run out of either time or money before I could exhaust seeing/doing everything I'd like to see or do.

Cons- there ain't much to do.

Pro- what you can do usually won't get you shot at.

    Re: Pros/Cons Entertainment in Iowa

If you're talking about entertainment in the sense of big acts or shows, I think Iowa has some advantages to go along with the obvious disadvantage of not being a major population center.

Most of what I would call pros are actually related to geography. Des Moines has Wells Fargo Arena which is a great, newer venue that can attract national acts. A benefit to the whole of Iowa is Des Moines' central location. Also, the way that population is distributed in Iowa means you're never all that far from a larger city that can draw some mid-range acts. In the west you've got Council Bluffs and Sioux City; central is mostly Ames and Des Moines; East has a lot of options with Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Davenport.

While it doesn't benefit income for the state, another benefit is the number of larger metropolitan areas in driving distance. Omaha, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Chicago are not all that far away for weekend trips to catch the largest acts.

Cons would obviously be that compared to these other midwest cities, Des Moines is relatively small and often gets skipped in tour schedules. I think the introduction of Wells Fargo has changed that trend somewhat, but it is certainly still present. And then the large problem with that is while it's convenient to drive out of state for entertainment, it doesn't help bring money to Iowa.

Anyway, not sure if this helps at all, but I thought I'd throw out a couple ideas for you. Good luck with the speech!
