More New Wrestling Coach Assistants
New Iowa State Assistants
The departure of four ISU wrestling assistant coaches and support staff this summer allowed for several new hires. Only associate coach Cody Sanderson and graduate assistant Dylan Long remain from Cael Sanderson’s 2008 staff. Here is a look at the new support staff members for the program:
Assistant coach Casey Cunningham
After winning the 157-pound NCAA title in 1999, Cunningham began his coaching career at his alma mater, Central Michigan. He has been a top contender on the U.S. circuit. Cael Sanderson said Cunningham was the No. 1 choice to replace departed-assistant Tim Hartung. Cael and Cunningham were once roommates at the Olympic Training Center.
Graduate assistant Shawn Contos
Contos came from an Ohio youth wrestling club. As an Ohio lightweight prep wrestler, he never won a state title, twice losing close matches to multiple-time state champions.
Graduate assistant Nathan Patrick
Patrick has wrestled at 84 kg. on the senior U.S. circuit, and was the second-seed at 184 pounds in the 2001 NCAA Tournament. The No. 1 seed was Cael Sanderson. Patrick was an actor in the 2007 wrestling movie “7 Minutes.”
Wrestling club coach Les Sigman
The undersized heavyweight was a four-time Div. II champion at Nebraska-Omaha, but gave top Div. I wrestlers fits throughout his career. He placed fifth at the Olympic Trials and had worked at Nebraska-Lincoln as a club coach. Sanderson said Sigman will commute to Ames from Nebraska three days a week.
