We should still be very excited about this team.

Iowa looked as good as I can recall Iowa looking over the last decade. They are strong in the trenches and are a qb away from being a very good team. We are a very young team (as is Iowa) playing our first road game against our biggest rival at Kinnick. I thought we gave a good account of ourselves outside of 2, maybe 3, drives. We've got a sophomore qb that is going to make alot of big plays the next 3 years, and a couple of freshmen receivers that we haven't had at ISU in a long, long time. We need to shore up our front 7 on defense ALOT in order to get to a bowl game this year, but we have a number of things to point to that this thing is going in the right direction. Let's beat UNLV.

Uhh...why wouldn't we be? We have a very young team, and all they'll do is grow from this game.

Remember iowa's season a few years ago, where we were there only loss? I could live with a season like that.

I agree...I still really like the bones of this team. This year will have lots of ups and downs. Still predicting 5 wins, but they have potential and I like the direction Chiz is taking us.

Re: We should still be very excited about this team.

Can we also improve our playcalling? I kept waiting for the middle screen paass over the middle for ARob, our one truly shifty runner. The two times they did versions of this in the second half went for big gains. It was open all day. I think we just wanted to shorten the game up and never did get in sync with what we needed to call for plays. We threw long once when it was late. Poor playcalling.

I see little mention of Bates going out at the 5 instead of the three. My opinion - horrible ref call on placing ball (chnaged the game). If done right, I would expect a score and game could have been won prior to the long punt return. So I guess Big Ten does no play review, they just run te same commercials over and over on their network. Anyone going to watvch BTN tonight commercial free for OSU game? Thought so. National HD for me, not BTN.

This game was definitely winnable, but we blew it in the end.

Re: We should still be very excited about this team.

I've seen worse playcalling. The only thing that bothered me was not getting the play in on time on several instances.

I will say, I wish we would have gone no huddle as we did in our first 2 games. Chiz huddled to try and control tempo, but I like the no huddle we did against SDSU and KSt.

The playcalling was not bad IMO. I know others will disagree.

5 or 6 wins with the youth on this team would be great. I can't recall having so many underclassmen (especially frosh) players with this talent. Johnson, Benton, Darks, Sed - these guys will be great players for the next three years.

Re: We should still be very excited about this team.

Don't get me wrong, I feel like I've been kicked in the junk losing when we had so many opportunities to put this team away. Mistakes in many areas cost us this game, but there is so much more promise coming out of this game and we definitely do not feel like our whole season is over from one stupid intrastate matchup. I am very excited about the offensive line as they held back the Iowa pressure very well on pass rushes, our players are very young and moved the ball very well. We had breakdowns for our kicker and many other young players, but this is also there first game in a hostile environment was very respectable. None of this is excuses and I definitely hold my head high as a Cyclone Fan!!! Bring on the Rebels and the Big XII!!!

I agree, nobody better be bashing the team after this. Next weeks game is HUGE!

Re: We should still be very excited about this team.

Obviously we can get much better than what we have done so far. However, the positive turnovers in first two games let us win the first two games. Stat wise we have a ways to go to get better. So yes, we should be excited. I just thought our offense would be even better with Darius Darks, Houston, and Sedric, and Arob. Seems to me we can get a lot better, but this was game three already. One more tuneup is left. KU will not be happy after losing to USF in two weeks. Todd Reison looked sharp in that game.

Re: We should still be very excited about this team.

I tip my hat to the Hawks, they made plays when it mattered. They also established a ground game. Couple that with sub-par tackling and poor field conditions and you get this result. I thought the play calling was very good given the situations we were in. Just because a screen pass works once doesn't mean you run it six more times. Iowa's defense is too good and will adapt quickly. You have to stick to the game plan, and run the plays you've designed for this game and have practiced in the week prior. But go ahead and second guess the coaches after the fact, sure run the screen pass.

"I think that people are responding to someone standing up and saying this is what we want to do and let's not be afraid to go for it,'' Pollard said. "I think Iowa State has a very conservative, modest background. We never pound our chest and say `Let's do it.' It's OK to set a goal. You can't do it if you don't say what you want to do. You should be proud of it.''

    Jamie Pollard, 6/2/2006

I am very very excited about this team! We have a lot to look forward to this year and the years to come after this year. Good things are going to happen, I can feel it!

Off topic but the Hawks are claiming this win gets them into the Top 25..

Re: We should still be very excited about this team.

For the record I specifically stated in a thread several days ago that I hoped for screen passes to be run all over the place in a thread from several days ago. The screen passes are needed for a team that cannot run good enough to maintain a drive. We have seen many teams run screens against us in the last three years and complete 75% of their pases. Screen passes should have been a bigger part in our gameplan on a muddy field.

That is one more reason why our playcalling could have been better IMO. When the game was running down to 3 minutes, throw it into the endzone four straight times instead of the throwing it to the 2 only to be tackled, then running, then a weak overthrow on fourth down. Maybe I watch too much NFL, but the playcalling on that four down series from the five was inadequate for sure. And we had used up all our timeouts.
