Tim Griffin ESPN Big XII Blog article on Arnaud

ESPN - Arnaud learned early about rivalry with Hawkeyes - Big 12

Arnaud's father, John, was a three-year starter for the Cyclones from 1978-81, earning the nickname of "Landshark" because of his ferocious hitting in the secondary. And he infused his son with the same kind of fierce determination for beating ISU's cross-state rivals from an early age.
I always wondered where 'Landshark' came from since last year during the KU game they were calling Austen 'Landshark'

"I hope to coach here until I retire," Hoiberg said.

But the phrase "landshark" came from the SNL skit, If I'm not mistaken.

The phrase "landshark" actually came from a term people called banks back in the 1800's. Many times farmers were given loans in which the interest/debt was so large that paying back the money was never a reality. The phrase arose to describe their feroucious and volatile tactics.....but who cares. In the end no matter where it came from the meaning is similar.

Although it would have been nice if he'd been more accurate, since in '78, John was playing high school ball, and about to becone a 7'0" high jumper the naxt spring.

BTW_I think Austen would be more of a Sky Shark.

I think you're thinking the origin of the term "loan sharks".

This is what wiki says about the origin of "land sharks":

Landshark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

References to "land sharks" appear in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century sailing chanties[citation needed], referring to merchants who cheated sailors. Indeed, the use of "shark" alone may have originally designated unscrupulous people, perhaps from the German "Schurke" "someone acting immorally", and only later applied to fish.
