    Smart Phones/I-Phone

Does anyone in central Iowa have an I-Phone? I know they are impressive, but does AT & T have efficient service in Iowa? I currently have a cell phone with U S Cellular and get good service. If the AT & T service is not that good around Des Moines, what other smart phones does anyone recommend? My needs are not that extensive, I just want another toy and some internet access on the phone.

I have heard of a few people dumping the I-Phone in Iowa due to the AT&T service being poor.

Verizon has something very similar to the iPhone in the LG Dare. It has gotten very good reviews (some say that some functions are even better than the iPhone) and the Verizon network is much better than the AT&T network.

    Re: Smart Phones/I-Phone

My wife and I both have iPhones. I have the 1st gen, she has the 3G. We both love our phones. I have the same number of dropped calls that I ever had with US Cellular, T-mobile and Nextel. One maybe every other month or so. I could care less about 3G speed since it just doesn't matter to me.

I wouldn't have any other phone.

    Re: Smart Phones/I-Phone

AT&T's network is the big problem with the iPhone, at least in Iowa.

If you live in a major metro area, it's generally not bad, though the 3G iPhone seems to be having somewhat serious network problems beyond just AT&T's spotty coverage. Get out in the country, and the coverage is spotty at best, and the phone doesn't help matters any.

I have other, more philosophical issues with the iPhone and Apple in general, but outside of those reservations, and the network being garbage, the iPhone is a pretty neat and impressive piece of kit.

I'm holding out for the Treo pro before my next upgrade. I suppose it depends on what you want to do with the device....

    Re: Smart Phones/I-Phone

I loved the iPhone 3G and left Verizon specifically for it, however, I just sold it on eBay after 45 days of barely any coverage - even in Des Moines. I spoke to several others that had similar problems. When there is coverage, you'll also find that EDGE is incredibly slow and 3G has supposedly been pushed back AGAIN until next year. Note that it was SUPPOSED to arrive here last summer.

I'm now back on Verizon with the Blackberry Curve (great device) and will probably get the Storm/Thunder when it comes out in mid October.

    Re: Smart Phones/I-Phone

I just picked up a Samsung Instinct, and switched to Sprint for it (from Verizon). It's a full touch-screen, very comparable to the iphone. Sprint service is not quite as good as Verizon was as far as dropped calls, but the extras (email, internet, navigation, tv) are better and the call quality is far from bad, so I'm happy.

I have been using Windows Mobile for the last 3 years. I'm on my 3rd device now... and have been really happy with it. The Verizon SMT-5800.

Out of curiosity, I've heard nothing but good things about the LG Dare. I'm in line to get a new phone in December, which would be better - the Dare or the Curve?

    Re: Smart Phones/I-Phone

Have the iPhone 3G. I only had one issue with coverage and that was a week after I got it, out by the newer Lowes in WDSM. Had no service for about 5 minutes.

Other than that, very few complaints.

Not glad to hear the 3G network in Iowa has been pushed back, again.

I like the Curve because I really like the perks of having the full compliments of professional-level email capabilities. The Dare is more of a consumer phone that just happens to do some level of email and web, though you'd miss all the extras and third-party apps that you can use for Blackberry and Win Mobile.

    Re: Smart Phones/I-Phone

Eh, my iPhone serves me well, and MobileMe (if you sign up for it) is great. I already had .Mac prior to MobileMe, which replaced .Mac. I'm disappointed with the coverage in some areas of Des Moines. Even near Grand View College, I sometimes get 1 bar to "No Service". Other places I get full bars, and excellent Edge coverage.

I mostly use my phone as a PDA that gets phone service, and as a portable gaming and application device, it has a long life ahead of it. Several of the applications developed and being developed for it are very impressive.

That said, if you need a smart phone today, it'll probably be best to look into the other options. I think the iPhone's popularity has caught the entire industry off guard, and AT&T's pressure to keep up with demand is causing some hiccups.

I wouldn't count on it ever happening.

It doesn't make sense for apple or Verizon, honestly.

Verizon will just have someone make a knock-off that does everything the iPhone does, but better.
