    Crossing fingers on field goals

I noticed last night that a majority of the student section was holding their crossed fingers in the air for Mahoney's second field goal. I didn't think to look the first game or for his first kick last night so maybe this only happened after he missed his first kick. However, I think this is a "tradition" that should die with Brett Culbertson and I think it will end as Mahoney will continue to show a consistent ability to make any and all field goals.

I don't mean to pick on the student section at all; I am only one year removed from there myself. But I think it kind of shows a lack of confidence in someone who has done a great job so far. Does anyone in the student section know if they were doing this for all kicks? Or was it just after his miss?

Like I said, I think Mahoney will kill this tradition himself just by his ability to make field goals well above the percentage that Shaggy did.

Maybe they were crossing their fingers hoping they wouldn't get hit with hotdog buns.

Re: Crossing fingers on field goals

It's been done for all kicks including the first game, but many of us in the student section including myself have made comments to people around us that "It's not Shaggy back there anymore."

I agree that it should die.

Who really cares what people do with their fingers?

Because it shows a lack of faith is someone who doesn't deserve it--and by extension, the rest of our team. It's not what you call support.

I really don't think it matters at all. Anything the student section does together doesn't bother me. By the way, to whomever brought the Cowbell signs last night, the band loves you guys.

Re: Crossing fingers on field goals

It won't stop. I bet there were new students there with their figures crossed and didn't know why.

I think this is just another example of how the football culture at ISU needs to be changed. Instead of being pumped and ready to crush someone, we are crossing our fingers and expecting our team to melt down in the forth. I can't tell you how many people were mumbling in the third quarter that we were going to lose.

I know that we haven't had the greatest success in the past, but it is circular reasoning to think that I'll change my attitude when the team gets better, because the team won't get better unless you change your attitude. Why would a player want to come to ISU if the fans expect to lose?

I think everyone should wave a dollar bill in the air to signify "Money Mahoney".

I can just image how many dollars would get stolen that way.

"Cowbell" is the name of one of the bits the Drumline plays. It involves a complicated solo by one of the Tenor drummers, and after it is played once, everybody yells, "faster!", followed by the Drumline playing it again, only faster. (duh)

When we play it, you'll see the student section waving their arms forward and backward, and they yell, "woop-woop".

Last night, someone had a sign that said, "COWBELL!", and another that said, "I've got a fever" and had a picture of a cowbell on it.
