Does anybody have DirectTV satellite internet? I am considering switching but don't know how reliable. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Re: DirectTV Internet

Do a simple search for "DirecTV" on this site, plenty of threads regarding the service and it's pros/cons.

    Mostly pros, IMO.

    It's a last resort, really.

In the pecking order of goodness (according to me):

FIOS > DOCSIS (Cable) > DSL > Wireless (EVDO) > Wireless (Microwave) > Satellite broadband > Dialup > Wireless (2G) > Wireless (1G) > HAM Radio > IP over carrier pigeon

    Re: DirectTV Internet

Yeah, I would do it as a last resort honestly. Maybe if you only browse the internet and read email. But if you do any sort of downloading or especially game playing it'll be the pits.

It's not a good idea at all. Tons of latency. You only want it if you live in the country and can't get anything else.

    Re: DirectTV Internet

downloading isn't horrible. Interactive stuff (i.e. web browsing) is the problem. The physics say you're going to latency, even if you are using dialup for your uplink side.

It's better than dialup, but it's certainly a unique internet experience.

I believe is was Drew Hastings who said his internet connection was so slow that if he sent a jpeg you could see a guy with a backpack running out his back door.

    Wireless != Satellite

Anyone a FIOS expert? While I was out in MD I saw Verizon advertising this all over the place. How much faster than Cable is it and is it something that many cities/areas are planning to do? I remember hearing 5-10 years ago how fiber-optics was going to be the wave of the future for TV/Internet and just wondering if that is still a reality or not.

Consider it from this perspective--how often do you lose TV reception because of storms? Would that same loss of internet signal be worthwhhile to you? That'll give you one perspective of how to evaluate their internet service. Not saying any of the others are better or worse, just one measuring stick.

I looked at it. My primary concern was the inability to get a signal everytime a thunderstorm rolls thru as it is with my satellite TV. (I like to view the Armageddon Doppler when I can't get a TV signal)

I ended up choosing broadband coverage thru Verizon wireless because with it being mobile, I've got access from my car via laptop. For the most part, I've been happy with the service, although every once in a while the network gets a little clogged. It's basically a small antenna about the size of a cell phone with a USB plug in, so it's pretty much idiot proof.

The big thing about your neck of the woods would be tower access. If you don't have it yet, you will within a couple of years. If they don't have broadband yet, you should be able to connect in the 60-80 kbps range, which would suck, but would be a little better than dial up.

Verizon is great for surfing but downloads are slower than fiber. Also, they have a much larger network than the others.
