Lucca: What should we expect this season?

In the other thread here ("Lucca article on GoCyclones"), Lucca says he's aware of the build-up in expectations for his play this season.

I'm not an X's or O's basketball guy, so I'd like to ask those who are, what might Lucca bring to the team this season? Mac says he's the team's best passer, and everyone and his mother expects him to be a great distance shooter.

Also, Mac said last season that Lucca was the most improved defensive player on the team (but, that doesn't mean his defensive game doesn't need a lot of work; guess we don't know how good his D-game is yet).

Mac has said the 2 and the 3 positions in his offense are really the same just on opposite sides of the floor.

So, will ISU run what is in effect a 3-guard offense (the 1, 2, and 3 positions), so it doesn't matter if Lucca is a 2 or a 3?

At his size (6-5, 215-lbs plus), will he do a lot of board crashing? Not being a basketball guy, I don't know if the coaches will send him to the boards a lot or keep him on the perimeter for shooting. How's that work?

Anyone seen Lucca practice? Has he got the quicks to be a good perimeter defender, he'll match up OK out there?

I'm tempering my expectations -- not my enthusiasm -- about Lucca's contribution this season, only because I don't see how a mortal can achieve them ;-) As a fan, I want to give Lucca the space he needs to settle in and get comfortable.

Just looking for some opinions from knowledgeable basketball types. Thanks.

Lucca does not rebound that well...as I have said before...rebounding is a huge concern.

I don't see him crashing the offensive glass hard, he should be in the get back with the other two guards to stop transition baskets. I would expect numbers slighlty lower then what he did this summer to start the season. How he holds up to the grind of the Big 12 is a big concern of mine.

Not exactly sure on the stats...but we are losing 15 to 20 rebounds a game from an average at best rebounding team. Going to have to block out and rebound as team...It's going to be tough to make up the difference.

I'm not worried about his physically so much as the travel, the day to day wear of practice, the mental aspects, all combined. I think that wears on a lot of people the first year they are playing.

He was playing and traveling with the German A2 team, so I don't think that should be much of an issue.

I have never met Lucca, that is correct. I would say the same thing about anyone coming in to play their first year in the Big 12. It's a long season with a lot of demands on your time between classes, practice, study halls, traveling, games, etc. Why is it hard to believe that someone might struggle with that?

Re: Lucca: What should we expect this season?

I would say Lucca is a great shooter, very crafty offensively, and he appears to be very strong. When I saw him play in the CCL I thought he was a very good passer and crafty ballhandler. He's not the best athlete in the world but he's good enough to make things happen. I think he'll help the team play more uptempo if they so choose. I've seen him play in teh CCL and I went to a practice last year. Not sure about him defensively or rebounding wise, I wasn't really watching that all that closely when in practice and the CCL doesn't really care too much about those things.

Re: Lucca: What should we expect this season?

I think that we can expect a good all-around game from him. Kind of like Hoiberg as a freshman. Maybe 11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal. Hoiberg was in the top 3 on the team in just about every category...even as a freshman. I don't expect Lucca to be as good as the Mayor, but I do think that he'll have a similar well-rounded game.

Everyone knows Lucca can stroke the ball, but I was more impressed with his court vision, and ability to pass the rock. He's not quick, but strong.

A big thanks to the NCAA, Lucca has a year under his belt of going to classes, practice ans study halls. Not quite a true freshmen but not a sophmore either. He at least knows the system we run and what to expect class and practice wise.

Don't get me wrong I am excited to see Lucca on the court and hope he can live up to the Hype that has been going around it would add to the excitement of this season.

However, I will be cautious about my expectations of a first year player.
