    Pit Bulls

Another reason not to get these dogs. I am not saying that the right owner can't make it a good dog within their property, but they are the most dangerous dogs to be allowed to run. I see situations in insurance all the time and don't understand why people keep owning them.

Those dogs should be banned in all cities and towns. If you want to own one, live out in the country.

It's all about the training. Pit bulls by nature are very sweet dogs. I could take my lab, beat the crap out of it for a few days, and guess what, it won't be very nice either.

    Re: Pit Bulls

A roommate in college had a pit bull. That was the nicest dog I have ever seen. She loved everyone. Was not the least bit territorial. If I had to choose between her or my chihuahua to thwart off a burglar, I would choose my chihuahua.

But, I do see why they are being banned. They have the potential to do a lot of damage.

I could do the same thing to my lab and she would cower in a corner for 2 days...until you pulled out a ball to play with. Labs are much different in demeanor due to nature, not nurture.

They do have the equipment to do damage, that is for certain.

However, by NATURE, they are a very sweet dog. The aggression is put there by cruel owners, aka, Mike Vick.

Interesting article, funny how we won't give insurance to anyone with those dogs listed, except the Lab. Labs have the most bites ever year, but that is because there are so many. The pit bull tries to kill when they attack, that is why they don't stop. Also interesting how they show no sign of attack until they do it. Scarry to think the author would still back a breed that attacked a child, mother, and father unprevoked.....

It's funny how every pit bull owner who's dog attacks a child says that it was such a sweet dog. You just don't know what is going to set these dogs off. When they do go off they are absolutely unrelenting.

By nature they are very aggresive dogs. Just like a labrador naturally retrieves. A terrier chases small animals and digs. A springer spaniel points. Pit bulls were bred with the sole purpose of fighting.

They have the instinct to attack dogs. That is why it is normally children who are attacked. They are the size of the dogs they were bred to fight.

I hate to say this because every pit bull I have met has shown no signs of "fighting" but it only takes one instance to ruin it all.

    Re: Pit Bulls

My dad and I raised dogs when I was a kid, so I've seen a vicious dog or two, and there isn't a medium-sized dog out there I can't take in an unarmed fight. (I've been bit and/or attacked by a few dogs in my life) But add the massive neck and jaw muscles, and frankly, I don't want to deal with the mis-named "pit-bulls".

Just too much risk for the return.

Can we get a Cybookie on this Phaedrus vs Medium-Sized Dog contest?

Yep. It is all about the owner.

If you take the time to train the dog correctly, and socialize it, establish dominance, etc (like you should with any dog) they are a great pet. The pit bull our roommate had in college was as good a pet as any I have ever had and was probably the least aggressive dog I have ever seen.

The problem is half the people that own pit bulls own them to try to act tough and so they train them to be mean. With those jaws they have, that's a bad combination.

Also should mention there are many different breeds of dogs that are commonly referred to as "pit bulls". These types are different sizes and also have different temperaments.

Sad as hell to see them putting to death all the dogs when they enact a city wide ban. Most of them are good dogs.

    Re: Pit Bulls

The only dog I have been bitten buy was a yorkshire terrier, do I think they should be banned, no. Dogs are like kids in the fact that not everyone should have one. There are no law to prevent kid ownership and they can end up doing far more damange then a dog. I think there should be very strict laws goverening dog ownership but no ban on the types and breeds of dogs you can own. Every Pitbull I have met/know has been a good dog with a good personality. It seems that the common factor in these or any dog attack is the idiot owners.
