    Celebration penalties

Anyone else think this rule was judged unfairly this weekend?

The BGSU guy gets a sack on the Pitt QB... pounds his chest 3 times and gets a flag.

I saw about 20 guys do the same thing during the Tennessee UCLA game and the Clemson Bama game.

    Re: Celebration pentalties

Yes, that is extreme. Saying that celebrations are out of hand and something needs to be done to control them. I dont mind stuff like that in a close game because it was an improtant play and big at the time. What I dont like is a player getting a sack when his team is down by 21 pts and acting like his sack won the game.

Although I think they should be able to celebrate a little bit...I think the celebration by the BGSU guy was a little over the top doing his best shawne merriman

    Re: Celebration penalties

It's a judgment call obviously, so some guys are going to judge it tougher than others.

I'm not a fan of such tight restrictions on it.

    Re: Celebration penalties

Some looked questionable but what I don't get was you watched Sportscenter and there were people jumping on each other or pumping fists and what not after some big plays or TDs in other games and none were probably flagged for it. I can see this new rule possibly costing someone a game this season on something that was very "iffy" celebration. Hope it's called consistently and just not when refs feel they are being shown up or something.

I agree with Lou Holtz on this one. It's an "all or nothing deal". Is just too subjective in football...

The best example of this that I have seen was in 2002, when Oklahoma beat Texas A&M 77-0. The Sooners were running fullback dives the entire fourth quarter up by 77 points. One of A&M's linebackers gets a stop behind the line of scrimmage and starts thumping his chest. When he gets back to the defensive huddle, his teammate slaps him on the helmet and points to the scoreboard.

    Re: Celebration penalties

I don't like the rule, or at least how they are going to officiate it. There should only be a penalty if it is blatantly taunting the opponent or some ridiculous dance. Let the kids be excited for crying out loud....

    Re: Celebration penalties

As long as it's not taunting and as long as it doesn't interfere with the normal time that a play would be set, I have no problem with it. Football is an emotional game, when you make a big play, you should be allowed to celebrate a little bit.

    Yeah, that.

But so many fail to realize it and expect guys to just keep it all inside.

The celebration rules came into play because a few players went way over the top - ruining it for everyone.

    Re: Celebration penalties

thats why there were excessive celebration penalties. It sucks that you can't just get excited over a play you made such as sack or whatever it be.
