    Your kid is fat

In the U.K. parents are to receive official letters telling them if their child has a weight problem under a Government crackdown on obesity.

    Re: Your kid is fat

The key quote to take from the article:
"This important move isn't about pointing the finger and telling parents that their children are overweight, instead its about equipping parents with the information they need to help their children live healthier lives."
The biggest motivation for many people to correct their lifestyles is to let them know that they're being watched or being judged. The less obese a society is, the fewer health concerns, and the more the health care system is freed up to treat those with real, unpreventable problems.

    Re: Your kid is fat

I envision it working something like this:

Father (F): Oooo, another letter from the government. Yay! I must open it at once.
    F: *opens letter, begins reading*
F: ...inform you that your son Nigel is too fat... Honey! Come here!
Mother (M): What is it honey?
F: Did you know our son Nigel is fat?
    M: I haven't really noticed I guess. Why?
F: Well, this letter I just got says that he's too fat.
    M: Hmm... Nigel! Come here!
    Nigel: What is it mum?
M: Well I'll be darned, he is fat isn't he.
F: Looks like it I guess. Nigel, it has come to our attention that you are too fat.
    Nigel: I am?
F: Yes. The government just told us so. Were going to have make some changes to your lifestyle.
Nigel: OK, as long as the government thinks its best.

And everyone lives happily ever after... THE END.

Fast forward to 20 years from then, Nigel, not having heeded the warnings, finds that he isn't eligible for the government's health care because he's a few points over the BMI limit, which is already a few points over the BMI's definition of "obese". He resorts to private health insurance, who denies his claim for the same reasons. Poor Nigel.

    Re: Your kid is fat

So EVERY kid is going to get measured 4 times? I wonder what the cost of such a program is? I wonder how accurate the measurements will be and who will be conducting them? Will they all be qualified to give accurate measurements?

    Re: Your kid is fat

If I got one of those letters, I would fire one right back at them letting them know that my kid might be overweight, but you're ugly and my kid can diet. You can't fix fugly.....

What next, they'll tell us we can't spank our kids.......... Oh wait??

    Re: Your kid is fat

I'm a little confused because not too long ago the PC police in Britian set out a letter (I think to day care workers) warning about little kids that are discriminators due to learned behavior from mum and dad.

What makes a little kid a parentally indoctrinated discriminator ? A kid that says 'yuck' or refuses to eat ethnic food.

So is a parent with a fat kid, still discriminating if they don't feed the kid ethnic food of marginal nutritional value ?

Since it is determined that tall people are more successfull in life on average (at least money and job wise), are parents going to get warning letters that their short kids are going to be failures ?

**Disclaimer. I'm proud to be 5' 7" and by BMI standards -Obese. Of course a 30 inch waist would beg to differ but I guess the government in its infinite wisdom knows best **

This is the problem, is that BMI's are a pretty horrible judge of obesity. Common sense can often tell the difference between someone with a spare tire, and someone who is obese. I would be all for these kinds of programs if there was a reasonable, logical, SCIENTIFIC, standard of obesity that didn't describe people that were obviously NOT riskily overweight as obese. Until then, it just won't work.

Gee, maybe if the government hadn't decided that they were his Lord and Saviour, Nigel wouldn't be living in a socialistic society. Poor Nigel.
