    "Gimmick" offense

We're past the days of only fundamental coaching, we need something unique and special to draw a crowd and recruits.

I saw Jeremy said this in his article about Norvell, and it got me thinking. I honestly think we need to get a guy that has a bit of an aggressive edge to him, somebody that will run some trick plays, and run something of a gimmicky offense. The reason I think this is because I donít think weíll ever recruit the kind of players to ISU that will consistently be able to line up and physically maul the other team. I donít know if itís the best idea, but perhaps it could give us the best chance to win. Thoughts on this?

I think that's where someone like a Harbaugh with his X/O knowledge might be a good fit. Or Kragthorpe. I'm not sure we can get the best recruits, no matter who comes.

That description seems to me like...

    Harbaugh
    Patterson
    Kragthorpe

While Patterson is a defensive guy, his teams have fielded some pretty potent offenses too.

    Re: "Gimmick" offense

I agree that a more aggressive offense is something we should want, but I don't buy into the idea that we'll never be able to recruit talent.

Sure, we live in the middle of nowhere. We don't have the greatest facilities. We don't have much, if any street cred. But to those criticisms, I have a few responses: West Virginia. Rutgers. Kansas State of the late 90s and early 2000s. Iowa. You get my point.

I really think to get over the hump we've struggled with, we have to get over the mindset that we can't do things just because we haven't been able in the past. Those teams did.

O god, do you remember the overall speed that team had against us in the Houston Bowl last year. Fast recievers, fast and mobile QB, and a defense who was very fast off the line. I just have a hard time believeing Patterson would come to ISU after not showing any interest in the coaching job at his Alma Mater (KSU) last year. But if JP could some how land him in Ames, it would be huge, and Jamie would be one of the greatest men on earth!

I'd be surprised to see him come too. However, I wonder if he thought his '06 TCU team would make a legitimate run at a BCS bowl this year - they looked like they might early - but haven't come through.

So, he could be viewing right now as his big chance to make the next step in his career - if in fact he wants to. All speculation on my part of course.

I'd just love to have him in Ames if he wanted to be here.

Hmm, good point, never really thought of it like that. Plus didn't I hear his wife went to ISU and his whole family were fans of ISU before he took the TCU job???

Plus, he might be sick and tired of that god awful train whistle they blow everytime they score, if he does want to come to ISU, but wants to bring the train whistle with him, I am no longer interested!

I have no idea about the fan part - but I know the wife is from ISU.

Each coaching family is different though - with how much influence the spouse & kids have on the destination of the coach's job. Some it could be a lot, some it could be some and others it could be a non-factor.

So who knows if Mrs. Patterson's ties to ISU carry any weight or not.

Just found this from Patterson's bio page. Talk about an instant hit.
    Great coach, great at rallies...

Aside from being an accomplished Division I head coach, Patterson is also a skilled guitar player. On several occasions, Patterson has entertained TCU fans with his guitar skills at pep rallies around the Fort Worth area.

    Re: "Gimmick" offense

I'm not so sure of a pure "gimmick" offense, but definately the offense needs to call some creative plays now and then. I'm too sick of shotgun Meyer, split back... fakes the handoff, Meyer takes off, sprinting to his right.... dropped for a two yard loss. Give me more of what I saw last Saturday - tough, punch mouth football. Give it to a good downhill runner and let him do just what Ryan Kock was able to do against Missouri. Then open it up with lots of play-action passing and keep them off guard with some trickery. If we can have a rushing game where a back can be used consistently and get us good yards almost every play, it will keep our defense fresh and wear down our opponent. Ooooh, I'm excited! Bring it on!

    We Need Balance on Offense

With the wind & sometimes rainy whether in Ames during the late fall, I'm not sure ISU could go to a gimmick offense like TT.

I'd like to see a coach who will run a balanced attack. The Huskers struggled the first couple years when they had no running game & they were forced to pass 40+ times a game. The key to any offense is a coach whose play calling keeps the opponent guessing run/pass, short route/deep route.

I know offense gets fans excited, but if ISU is to ever be a consistent 7-8 win team it starts on defense.
