Is JP talking to the best NU assistant?

A local station played some clips from Cally's weekly presser today and he sounded more than willing to assist Norvell in moving on. Many NU fans are more excited about Shawn Watson who appears to have displaced Norvell as Cally's fair-haired boy. Norvell is in the ackward position of occupying the OC position that many would like to see Watson assume. He was OC for 6 years at Colorado and a head coach for 3 years at one of the 1AA schools in ILL. He may not be on JP's list, but I'd at least like to see him get a look.

Re: Is JP talking to the best NU assistant?

Do you think that Nebraska fans are going to act like they are excited about Norvell when they hear from Callahan today that he is interviewing to be the HC for a conference rival?

Watson has been getting kudos for most of the season as one of the reasons for NU's improvement this year. This has been going on before the job at ISU opened up.

Geez, Callahan sounded like Norvell's agent...please take him, he will be great at ISU and he really wants the job. How is he going to like working there next year?

I think callahan wants to rid himself of Norvell and have all of the offensive decisions to himself.

I was thinking the same thing. What motivation does Callahan have to pimp this guy for the ISU opening in the media?

Re: Is JP talking to the best NU assistant?

A head coach who helps his assistants get other positions is a head coach who attracts other quality assistants. Good assistants almost always are looking to take the next step. Not saying I am all for Norvell, but most coaches would do that.

With Norvell in Ames, Bill will know him like a book. Better to take the TCU unknown who can recruit Texas.

Re: Is JP talking to the best NU assistant?

Callahan brought Norvell with him from the Raiders. Obviously he likes and respects him.

It seems to me that he just trying to help his buddy land his first HC gig. It's also easier for Callahan to swallow losing him with Watson waiting in the wings.

This is simply a case of a senior member of the coaching fraternity helping out his protege - nothing more.

12 years ago Mac brought Norvell with him from Wisc. One could assume that he liked and respected him. It was no big secret that after several years the staff was not one big happy family. Liking someone and having him fit in with the rest of the staff are not the same thing. It was more than a coincidence that a certain well respected coach who left didn't rejoin the staff until after Norvell moved on.

I've seen many cases where coaches do what they can to assist one of their guys in furthering their career. This situation doesn't seem like one one of those. Cally acted more like he would be PO'd if he still had to work with Norvell. While things seem strange, it could be an oddity on Cally's part rather than something related to Norvell.

Re: Is JP talking to the best NU assistant?

i dont see why we would want someone from inside the BigXII. Our biggest conference rival would have inside information about our head coach and know some of his gameday strategies. I guess it goes the other way for us too, but I just dont see why we would want this...
