Grand View College: Never been beaten!

I just got back from GVC's first ever football game, a 20-17 win over Briar Cliff (The last touchdown by BC was a garbage one with 3 seconds left on the clock). I was actually impressed! Most of the team, including the quaterback are true freshman, but their defense (who should get the game ball as a unit),their passing game, and their running back all looked impressive. The only obvious problem was with the offensive line (thank goodness we have a mobile quarterback!). I expected a thrashing since this was our first ever game, but we came away with the victory. The reason that this seems relevent on this board is that GVC's coach is Mike Woodley, a former coach at ISU. He apparently did a fantastic job getting the team ready, there were very few penalties and everyone looked together.
It was a fun atmosphere and there were over 4000 in attendance (amazing considering we only have about 1700 students). Anyway, it was fun to see my two favorite teams both pick up wins to start the season!

Wish I could have made it, but it sounds like it was a blast. Not bad for an upstart program!

GV will get a much better look next week vs Simpson who brings back a lot of guys from last year. Briar Cliff has now lost 12 games in a row and is in their 5th or 6th year of football.
If GV keeps drawing that many people for a game, they will outdraw Drake. It will be interesting to see what happens on a weekend when they both have home games.

Grand View is going to get crushed by Simpson! Right now, Simpson is on a different level, I'm not trying to put down Grand View, but I would expect that this will be like ISU vs. SDSU, two programs that are just in different places. I'm excited about what will happen in two or three years. These kids are young, all in a new system, and they still looked good.
As far as attendance goes, I'm sure that it will die down. We have three more home games this season so we'll see what happens.

I don't know if crushed is the right word. Simpson is a lower half team in the Iowa Conference so if it is a blowout, it might not bode well for GV the rest of the year. Don't discount the value of having the first game of the year under the belt of the Vikings players as well.

    Wartknight,
Do you mind if I ask if you have a Wartburg connection? GVC will be playing them this season...

If they are playing them, it is a JV game. Wartburg has St. Norbert and Augsburg of Minneapolis as their non conference.
I played at Wartburg several years ago and was the radio announcer for them for a few years following that until I got into coaching in DM.
Still stay very connected to the program.

Re: Grand View College: Never been beaten!

How many scholarships does Grandview get? I know in most NAIA sports it is pretty much only limited by their budget. Shouldn't they be bringing in better players than Simpson and Wartburg if they can offer free school?

Re: Grand View College: Never been beaten!

Scholarships will vary as they can split them up like UNI and D2 schools can. Some kids will get as little as $500. I had lots of little offers to play for a schollie, but it was going to be much cheaper to go to Wartburg with all the academic money that came in.
Kids can look at it 2 ways, play to say you get a schollie or pay less to go to school.
Drake which offers no schollies has never lost to D2 Upper Iowa.
2 years ago, Loras (no athletic $$$) lost by 2 to St Ambrose who is in NAIA like GV.
After D1 and 1AA, other than the top few teams, there isn't much difference in the quality of football at other levels.

Re: Grand View College: Never been beaten!

I would think that NAIA would be pretty high level of competition considering all the people that can't qualify for NCAA ball. I know, in baseball at least, NAIA is probably right under D1 in terms of talent. They can bring in alot of latin and foreign players and there are some schools, especially down south, that offer as many as 30 full rides.

Re: Grand View College: Never been beaten!

NAIA Baseball has a lot more separation from the other levels. WHen my brother was playing at Wartburg, they beat an NAIA school 47-0.
After D1, football can get pretty watered down, especially in this state.
In Iowa, after ISU, Iowa, UNI, and then the South Dakota Schools pick through the kids, there are 10 D3s, close to that many NAIA's, a host of Jucos, Drake, and UIU (D2), not to mention the northern Missouri D2s and Southern Minnesota D2s competing for what talent is left.
For the most part, that talent in the DM area that doesn't go to NW Missouri St heads to Central. In NW Iowa they go to Northwestern (Orange City) and in NE Iowa they go to Wartburg. Very much a generalization, but for the most part accurate. Grand View fills a pretty good niche of offering scholarship football in the Metro, and if marketed correctly, has nearly unlimited potential as far as where they are located.

Tough area to be in. Have to compete with Northwestern and the UN-O for Western Iowa athletes.

They dont spend a whole lot of money on athletics either. Quite frankly the whole school is run like crap. The score was close, but BCU really needs to catch a break.
