Home & Home series with the Gophers??

I just got back from the Minnesota STate fair.
On the way there, we went past the new Gophers Football stadium. It looks like it is going to be quite nice when they are done. It got me thinking that we should have another Home & Home series with the U.
There are a ton of alum up here, and a lot of students from the MSP area.
What do you think? Pro's, Con's? Could become a great out of conference rivalry.

I think with the Jack Trice history that could get pretty ugly.

Pros: Great regional draw, good for recruiting (A-Rob is from Minneapolis)

Cons: 2nd Big 10 team on the schedule for the year after Iowa. However, it beats scheduling another MAC/D-I AA team. Nothing wrong with upping the competition.

    I like it.
    2 cupcakes
    Iowa
    Minny.

Of course if both Minny and Iowa Suck then that doesn't help.

Re: Home & Home series with the Gophers??

Seems like a very logical choice for a series. Close by, BCS conference team, lots of alumni/fans/students in between. Would Jamie put Minny on the schedule alongside Iowa? Would be a tough sell, I think. Personally, I think we should scrap the Hawks and play some other teams in the Big Ten, but that clearly won't happen.

I think it would be great to have a series with the Gophers, Badgers, Illini, Spartans, etc.

Re: Home & Home series with the Gophers??

I live in the Cities too & have said for a long time that for both basketball & football, a series with the Gophers would be awesome. For both sports, both schools are about in the same position, new coaches, rebuilding. In fact, Iowa State is the closed D1 school to the U of M.

I do know that for football, however, ISU has said they don't want to play two non-conference games against B10 opponents, which makes sense.

What a great road trip & game that could be every year!

So lets drop the series with the Hoks. We really have nothing to gain from that game anyway. They treat it as their superbowl. We gain nothing for beating them, and it looks bad when we lose.

Re: Home & Home series with the Gophers??

Why does it matter if we play 2 Big 10 schools? I would rather see something like: Iowa, Minnesota and some other lower end BCS conference school (i.e. UCONN, Syracuse, Ole Miss) than Iowa, UNLV, Kent. Any BCS conference opponent is great. Tickets will sell and people from both school will travel. That would be two sellouts!

Re: Home & Home series with the Gophers??

As a former resident of the Cities, I'd be in for a home-and-home. I think the last couple times we played Minny, it was at the dome (ie: we got no home on our end.) The best part of playing the Gophers: at the end of the game, no matter the outcome, we could meet in the parking lot to discuss just how much we hate the Hawks! (An initial common bond I found with my new M neighbors when we moved there.)

I am totally for it! And in 1997 we played both Iowa and Minnesota, also in 1993 we played both Wisconsin and Iowa, so we have some precedent.

I'm all for it too. However, I don't think it would happen for a while. Isn't our football schedule set through 2015-16?

Re: Home & Home series with the Gophers??

Two year or three years ago, I wrote the athletic director of the University of Minnesota, Joel Maturi, about this and asked why we don't do a home and home football series with the Cyclones vs. Gophers like we did for men's basketball. He says that they have played in the past but that actually Iowa State has turned down recent requests citing that they do not want to play two big ten opponents during the non-conference. Granted, that was back when the Gophers were winning 7-9 games a year and consistently making bowl games. I would love to see it happen. Not too mention, it would be an excuse to drive up and see a Cyclones victory at the new gopher stadium.

Re: Home & Home series with the Gophers??

Why am I the only one scratching my head and questioning a "home and home" series? There's no realistic way that either Minni or ISU will agree to be the away team twice.

The most realistic option is a "home and away" agreement. (i.e....one home game, one away game per team)
