    2 QB system thoughts...

After last night, I really think the quarterback rotation could work well. Two QB systems usually fail due to the fact that neither quarterback is fully comfortable in the system, or able to have any kind of rhythm with their teammates. I thought the rest of the team looked comfortable no matter who was back there, and I think both QBs looked comfortable. Also, there was no doubt in my mind that Arnaud is the all around better QB but Bates definitely brings a good change of pace, and made me think that we really don't need to just pick one and play him...

It is very tough to tell from last night's game. They did not really open up the passing game at all. Only 159 total passing yards. About 40 of those yards came on two passes, Sed and the early one to Collin Franklin. Both of those passes where to guys who where covered but just made GREAT plays. I would like to see more of the passing game next week.

I thought that AA solidified his place on the top of the depth chart a little more last night.

Bates is way to atheltic to keep off the field, he has to play somewhere

    Sean Keeler, is that you?

I like the 2 QB situation; both are too good to not be playing.

I thought both did well, but I think Arnaud looked a little more polished. I agree that Bates is too good to keep off the field though.

Bates is way behind from an experience standpoint - but I think he's hands down the better athlete and has the greatest upside, especially as a dual threat. I just hope he gets enough game time early on to "make his case".

It's also funny that people are ignoring some of Austen's better attributes and upside, because we hardly saw any of the playbook opened at all...a good portion of which I suspect caters to his strengths.

    Re: 2 QB system thoughts...

Maybe it was just me, but I didn't see a two QB system last night. I saw two people trying to fight for the starting job.

I think Arnuad showed consistency with his passes and running of the offense that he continues to deserve the nod at the job. From here is where you can start utilizing the two QB system. That's where you put Bates in on situational plays in the same series. Last night is was more of just you play this possession and you play that possession. Not really a two QB system in my book.

I agree. We didn't throw the ball down the field much which is definitely an Arnaud strength. Bates's long balls looked to be high. Bates is an exciting player but Arnaud is definitely a better passer. He had some real zip and accuracy on the few throws that went downfield.

    Re: 2 QB system thoughts...

I don't know if it was first game jitters, but Bates looked like he was trying too hard to me. On several of his runs he was not securing the ball very well, and I was sure we were going to see another fumble.

Arnaud looked to be the better leader to me, more confident and supportive of his teammates, while Bates is definitely a great athlete and very good QB in his own right.

I feel like Arnaud strengthened his position slightly, but certainly didn't distance himself enough to win the job last night. I hope both get their chances again next week, but I also hope we go to Iowa with a starter and a backup. I'm not convinced that the 2 QB system is going to work down the road.

    Re: 2 QB system thoughts...

2 QB systems don't work. The team needs to be able to get into a rythym, to rely on a QB that they know, having 2 QB's makes that very difficult.

I'm not as high on Arnaud as most on this board seem to be. I think Bates has the greater potential given his athleticism. We're going to need all the weapons we can get. Bates showed good decision making this game in regards to his passing, add to that what he can do with his feet and I think we have to think about giving him the nod.

    Re: 2 QB system thoughts...

Last night they seemed to call much more controlled and easier pass plays for Austen then they did for PB. They seemed to gamble a little bit more and throw more down field with PB. Austen did a greate job and his passes were nice but they were also mostly WR screens and little dump outs to the TEs. PB was throwing the ball high last night but in fairness he was also throwing the ball farther down the field than Austen was asked to.
