Like TCU's Patterson...you might get another Jim Wacker

Many in Minnesota thought Jim Wacker of TCU would be the answer for Gopher football. He had a great record, personality and would have that "Texas recruiting network." Unfortunately, he was a disaster. He could not bring any recruits north, and couldn't make the shift to the Midwest. Having Midwest roots like Harbaugh is the package we need. I'm not sold on the Texas pipeline.

I think if people expect us to start competing for the best players in the state of Texas they are setting themselves up for disappointment.

You certainly aren't, but you can be very successful mining the second tier talent from Texas. That is why a coach that has a network of relationships with the high school coaches in Texas is far more important than trusting that name recognition of a coach is going to be able to find the undiscovered talent left by the big boys.

Sometimes it works (see Hayden Fry at Iowa), sometimes it doesn't. I do know this...Patterson can coach and his teams play tough disciplined football.

there are not enough scholarships in TX and Oklahoma for all the kids playing HS football, so there is plenty of talent to go around. We will never get the best players from Texas, but there are always plenty of good ones that don't get to stay home and play. Recruiting the midwest is good, but go to the deepest well too.

    just my opinion...

Apples and Oranges. In eight seasons Wacker had only two winning seasons and was two games under .500 for his TCU career. Wacker was an offensive coach and not a defensive coach like Patterson.

Patterson is twice the coach Wacker was.

And what quality were his assistants who started recruiting? Hey, now they have Glenn Mason from Kansas. They are Movin On Up.

Patterson would be a great hire. He's 8-2 this year. His last win was a 52-0 spanking of SDSU.
It's probably been posted before, but nice resume.

There are A lot of Players in Texas

I would agree if any ISU fan thinks we are going to get the pick of players from Texas they don't understand college football.

That said, the UT's, A&M's, OU's and other major powers get the players from Texas that are ready to play. ISU needs a head coach or assistant coaches that have strong ties to Texas HS coaches and can get the 2&3 star kids that can be potential all Big 12 players if they are given 2-3 years to develop.

I like his type of offense and defense. At ISU we will probably never be able to line it up on O against Texas and just plow them over. We need a different kind of offense and defense strategies to win.
