    Re: Chizik on Cotler...right now.

hot hand will dictate how long Arnaud/Bates play....not script specific.

Jason Scales has had a great camp....expect him to play quite a bit behind A-Rob

Guyer will kick the first field goal....

    Mahony will do kick-off's

Not sure on who will step up and be the 'playmakers' on defense. Coach said it will be interesting to see this develop under the lights under real fire.

    Re: Chizik on Cotler...right now.

The final bit was Cotlar asked what Gene's goals are, aside from #'s and wins and losses.

Gene stated he wanted a smarter football team. That he could name a number of positions last year that weren't very smart, didn't make smart decisions. That he want smart plays, not turning the ball over and that will help keep us in games.

He also said that both kickers have been doing well, and really banging the ball from outwards of 50. Can't say what's going to happen when "the lights get turned on" - which is slightly ominous.

Probably a reason why he recruited two.

I wouldn't use the word ominous. Maybe cautious. It is right of a coach to be suspect of his players, especially kickers, until the lights come on.

    Two words: Brian Jansen.

Lights out in practice, couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with the lights on in games.

Shaggy was similar, supposedly hit 'em a lot in practice and we know all too well how it went in games, minus ISU vs Iowa 2007.

As with any position, having 2 kickers that will push one another for time will only make them, and ISU FB, better.

I love the depth and competition Gene & Co. are building.
