Bates to WR? Chizik: Forget about it

If you wish, you guys who continue to hope, push, believe Phillip will play WR this fall can give it up. As some of us have argued, his role at quarterback is too vital for him to get snaps elsewhere. Who says so? Gene Chizik says so:

Go Cyclones - Arnaud gets nod to lead hometown team

(Chizik) also said that Bates will only see action at quarterback in 2008.

Iowa State football: Cyclones hand the ball to Arnaud | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

Chizik nixed the idea of moving Bates back to receiver.

“We used Phillip last year at some different positions, because he wasn’t ready to play quarterback,” he said. “He’s ready (now) to play quarterback.”

Re: Bates to WR? Chizik: Forget about it

He may only be on the field as a quarterback, but if we didn't line him up somewhere other than behind the center, I think it would be a mistake.
We should see both of them on the field at the same time. Similar to what the Steelers did with O'donnel and Kordell a few years back.

And, down at the bottom, Wallace Franklin has been reinstated, despite how some here denigrated him. Depth is always good.

I'm sure someone will start a thread, but I wanted to mention it here.

So, then, he's just a decoy? Better to have an actual, bonafide, ready-to-catch receiver/runner on the field, then, rather than someone the foe quickly will learn to ignore.

Or, if he's to be part of a flim-flam play, where he ends up throwing the pass, how many times a season can that be used? If he lines up, and the defense knows he's going to pass or be a decoy, not much point, some here will argue.

We'll see, I guess. Seems to me, though, that Sedrick Johnson, Darius Darks or others are better to line up and actually be ready to catch passes. Could be (and Chizik says so) where Bates best contributes to this team is at quarterback.

It might be a mistake if we had any other quarterbacks. We don't. Jerome Tiller is it, he has hardly mastered the playbook, and he'll be redshirting.

Sure, we'd all like to maximize Phillips athletic contributions. But if AA were to do down, Phllip is it. If they both go down, just wash away the season. However heroic Jerome might be in trying, he'd be in over his head.

Maybe next year. If Phillip isn't redshirting.

Bates is a QB... period. And he's a darn good one too.

He will play a lot for us at the QB position. In fact, I think both guys will get nearly equal playing time Thursday night.... and whichever one moves the offense the best will be your starter for Kent St the following week. This is an ongoing battle IMO.

Bates is too talented of a player to be standing on the sideline.....if he's not playing QB, then find a way to get him on the field.

I agree that it will be an ongoing battle and I think the staff knows that they can't risk Tiller's RS since he really has a shot at fighting for playing time starting next year. He'll be behind AA and PB but he has some amazing abilities.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

I just wish we would have RS Bates last year. Outside of "the catch" against Iowa, he did nothing. Any of our WRs could have caught that ball over Klinkenborg IMO.

It sure would be nice to have Arnaud as a sophomore, Bates as a RS freshmen, and then give Tiller a RS as well. They all could have been staggered beautifully.

Bates is an athlete but that doesn't make him a great WR.

Frankly I hope both stay at QB the rest of their careers - honestly with the way the offense wants the quarterback to run the ball guys are going to get dinged up. They'll play at some point and it will probably be because the other guy can't go.

A few years back? wasn't that like a decade or so ago?

I would like all the people that I bet to come forward and pay up! I said 4 months ago that Bates would not play WR at all this year only to get laughed at.

Do people not understand that we don't have a backup if he plays WR?!?! Tiller is redshirting!
