What should the penalty be for overdue library books?

Heidi Dalibor was arrested after she failed to return two library books. The library forwarded the case to police, who issued a citation for Dalibor's failure to return the materials or pay the fine. The citation included a court date, which Dalibor admits she ignored. With arrest warrant in hand, police showed up at Daliborís door and led her away in handcuffs.

Dalibor paid her $170 fine and was released.

Still, she isnít planning on returning the books.

Difference here is she ignored a court order and had absolutely no intention of ever returning the books... she was freak'n smiling in her police mug shots

Re: What should the penalty be for overdue library books?

Library fine should never be greater than the retail price of the book. The library can take that fine money and go purchase a new copy of the book. I once forgot I had a book checked out from Parks, and it ended up costing me about $80 -- that was just the price of the book, too.

While she was a dolt for not paying attention to the library's calls or the citation and court date, I will agree that the books are hers if her fine payment covered the retail price.

She had no intention of returning the books before they took her to court... she wasn't going to pay the fine or return them

Wouldn't this essentially make the library a bookstore? In general should it be ok to keep stolen items as long as the monetary value is eventually paid to the owner when the stealer is caught?

I would agree. Although for those who lost a book, the price seems fair, it is a lot of extra work for the library to prepare and catalog the book. Also, I know there are plenty of hard to find books that people would just "keep," happy to pay the retail rate.

Re: What should the penalty be for overdue library books?

My wife formerly worked in a library. One day somebody brought back a book that was 34 years overdue. It was a couple who was moving off their farm and found a book their son checked out when he was in jr. high.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year oldís life:
The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves Orcs. ~ John Rogers

Yeah, but that $170 would have included court costs. Not to sure of how many books I know of that would be covered by $30.

Re: What should the penalty be for overdue library books?

We check out copious amounts of books, and just the other day, by 4 yr old left 5 library books out in the rain.

I'm thinking if this lady got cuffed for overdue books, my boy should probably get 20 to life.

Re: What should the penalty be for overdue library books?

If you make less than $102,000 you should get to keep the book without having to pay anything. if you make between $102k and $250k you should have to pay the retail price of the book but we'll give you a tax rebate for 1/2 the value, and if you make more than $250k you should have to pay a fine of 100x the value of the book.
