    Cable/Internet package

What's the best deal these days? I just moved back to Iowa after 3 years over seas and am trying to figure out the best deal for internet and cable at home.

    Thanks.

I guess it all depends on where you live and what you need. What are your options?

    Re: Cable/Internet package

This is one of the most loaded questions you can ask around here.

It depends on your needs/wants/desires and budget.

For the best of everything (IMO), you'd have this:

    Qwest for home phone
    DirecTV for TV
    Mediacom for internet

Mediacom probably has the best prices for a bundle, but also crap phone and the TV is so/so.

    Re: Cable/Internet package

That is the first complaint I have really seen from someone about mediacoms phone service. From the people I have talked to they have preferred mediacom's phone service over qwest.

It's not that it's bad, it's just that it's not good old fashioned phone that just works even during a power outage. It's not a huge deal, but all else being equal, it's nice to not have to worry about it.

DirecTV is pretty expensive compared to Mediacom or Dish Network. I'm not sure it offers anything better than Dish Network either.

but for sports offerings, DirecTV is the way to go. Sure DirecTV is pricer than Dish Network, but when was the last time you heard DirecTV being in a programming dispute over money? It happens all the time with Dish Network.

    Re: Cable/Internet package

Who needs phone service, what happens that requires service? I have had Qwest for years and never had a problem, is this a Mediacomm thing?

My wife had Mediacom phone while we were dating, and it would randomly (and weekly) not ring and send people straight to the machine.

I have Qwest DSL and phone with the Direct TV package (HD, sports pack, movie pack) and it's pretty awesome. I think you get pretty good savings by bundling it all together with one company.

    Re: Cable/Internet package

I strongly suggest DISH network and I'm a DirecTV guy. IF you don't care about NFL Sunday Ticket, NBA League Pass, etc, etc - then DISH is the way to go. They don' t have a "sports pack" for you to order for $12 per month but their prices are MUCH, MUCH lower and they don't screw you for every extra TV you have in your house. I'd switch if I didn't have to pay a cancellation fee with DirecTV.

    Re: Cable/Internet package

Mediacom Phone is great. No problems. Doesn't mean you won't though just like anything else in life.
I think this has been beat to death though.

If you don't care about MOVIE Channels, you don't need more than 3 receivers then DirectTV is probably your best bet with a DSL Phone package from qwest. If you don't need a ton of channels and HD then Dish/DTV can be cheap. Where it adds up I have found is when you have 4+ receivers, Movie and Sports packages, DVR and HD services.
I think HD is in a gray area right now since a lot of stuff isn't even broadcasted in it yet. For example why does ABC Family need to be in HD when all their movies are 5-10 years old that they play etc..

I am a cable guy currently for a few different reasons, but that is my 2 cents.

NFL Network, Big Ten Network, Comcast Chicago, WGN, ESPN's is all I need for sports programming.

What channels does DirecTV have that Dish doesn't offer? DirecTV seems to nickel and dime you more than Dish.

I have America's 200+, HD-DVR receiver (2 rooms), standard receiver (2 rooms), local programming and pay $64/month. I would have paid 85 for DirecTV for that package.

CMTHD, MTVHD, NickHD, and VH1HD never--and I mean never--run HD programming, so those shouldn't really be counted (even though DirecTV does count them in their marketing).
