    Bird's Nest...

How in the world could they not fill in the top and dome it in???

The only open part is over the track itself. I would think that if you are spending so much money building facilities, etc, you would do that and fill it in so the elements aren't a factor.

I was just watching the 800 semi's and the first heat it wasn't really raining, you could tell a bit of the track was a little wet, but that's it. The last heat it was pouring and looked almost like there was standing water...to the point where you could see it splashing up when they were running...That really isn't fair to those runners, although I think they went out a lot faster the first 400 and ended up running faster than the other heat anyway...

Doesn't make any sense to me...

I hate indoor track. The roof is for the fans. In outdoor track you have to contend with the elements. It is an even playing field if they all are in the same environment.

Its not like you just have to close in the top and its a dome. It wouldn't be that cheap. You'd have all of the atmospheric controls to worry about (AC, heat, etc).

    Plus, indoor track sucks.

I agree, everyone's running in the same conditions, so who cares.

apparently you didn't read my post...they weren't. the first heat wasn't raining. the 2nd heat was. that is an obvious disadvantage. I'm not at all saying I like indoor track at all, cause I don't.

Probably my biggest gripe is how people qualify for the next round...to me, it makes sense to do the top 8 times overall. There are cases where the 3rd place person in a heat who automatically qualifies is slower than someone in another heat who didn't even qualify cause they weren't top 3.

Well didn't you hear that China has the technology to keep it from raining during the olympics?

I heard the rain was all CGI, and that the race officials were miming their duties because the REAL race officials weren't cute enough for TV.

    Re: Bird's Nest...

I don't understand why they couldn't have put a retractable roof on it. Seems odd to spend that much money on the facility but not put a retractable roof over top of it as well.

In your scenario... there wouldn't be an even playing field which is what you promote.

Having to qualify in your heat, you have to beat the other runners running in that moment, under the same conditions. Qualifying the top 8 overall, the elements can change.

Just saying, you can't have it both ways.

Except that scenario you quoted of mine, what I said was my biggest gripe has nothing at all to do with whether and the elements...

    Re: Bird's Nest...

The original plan included a retractable roof but they abandoned the idea because of of the cost and safety reasons. Apparently they spent too much money on fake fireworks.

    Re: Bird's Nest...

Has any Olympics ever been competed on an indoor track. There's always a big difference between Indoor Championships and Outdoors.

    Wonder if that's a reason...

they are basically two different sports. Kind of like beach volleyball and indoor team volleyball.

What about Montreal? Or did they add the roof later?
