    ISU's kickers

A good article about ISU's two kickers in the Sioux City Journal.

Chizik: Plan in place for young ISU kickers

    Lee News Service

AMES -- There will be no apprenticeship for Grant Mahoney and Zach Guyer.

When Iowa State steps onto the field for the first time Aug. 28 at home against Football Championship Subdivision South Dakota State, either Mahoney or Guyer will be handling the kicking chores.

There is a chance both the true freshmen will have roles for the Cyclones.

It's also a good bet a freshman will be handing the long snapping chores for the special teams as well with freshman Dakota Zimmerman and Zac Tucker currently sitting 1-2 on the depth chart.....

    Re: ISU's kickers

If I wanted to get sick to my stomach I'd drink too much tonight vs reading about our special teams.

I hope that all of the true freshman will be ok.

    Who will be the holder?

    Re: ISU's kickers

part of me wants to believe that past kicking woes that surround the Cyclones are over now that Chizik is here and recruiting, but part of me knows that I can't believe it until I see it. Ya keep pulling me back in Cyclones...well, at least we're not Florida "Wide Right/Left/w/e" State I suppose...

    Re: ISU's kickers

I think we will be better on kickoffs, kickoff return and punt return. Field goals and punts~ we'll see.

I wouldn't be surprised if Brandtner makes the all-Big 12 team at the end of the season.

    Re: ISU's kickers

Food for thought and take it for what it is worth. Some of last years troubles with the special teams can not be all laid on the kickers or special teams players themselves(I know many like to place blame on kid on scholarship). I was told that much of the focus and knowledge of the special teams coach is on the running game, not special teams, hence the lack of growth in this particular area .i.e. kicking, returns, on and on....

Now that has been said, I think we all can agree that there might of been a few coaches, including Chiz that were learning on the go last year. Let's hope all have learned from last years trials and have networked with other coaches in the off season. I think our success at the end of last season shows that our Head coach was learning on the go and getting better as well as a few others. I think JB did a great job with the running game considering the situation last year, however, perhaps a little more focus on the special teams is being paid....I would bet this is the case...

    Re: ISU's kickers

Is there any chance that we would start one of the kickers to do both kickoffs and FGs.... and then if we don't ever have to use the other kicker, we could RS him?

Do we want to get a year separation between these two guys, or do we just recruit another kicker a couple years from now to take over later?

    Re: ISU's kickers

I am worried that bad snaps early in the season/career of these kickers could get them down for a long time..... we don't need shaky kickers.

Please don't expect too much this year. These guys are freshman and they will have their growing pains. I remember a guy that missed the winning extra point against Nebraska as a Sophomore (Freshman weren't eligible in those days) and he never missed another PAT the rest of his career. The miss haunted him for a long time, but one day the fans wake up to realize what a great kicker he was.

    Re: ISU's kickers

I agree, but Culbertson was definitely an issue last year. This year all my questions are on the guys around the kicker and punter- not the kicker/punter themselves. Brandtner should be solid, and the kickers shouldn't do any worse then last year. The question is how the kick/punt return and kick/punt coverage, will be this year.

I would not worry about red shirting, it would only give you one extra year anyway. Most kickers don't do field goals and kickoffs. They find the one they are best at and specialize at it. I would love to see it that way at ISU again. We can recruit more down the road.
