Out There Iowa v. ISU Idea

So now that Newton got the Nationwide series, I was thinking.... I remember there was a racetrack owner that wanted to have Tennessee and Virginia Tech play a game on the infield and pay each school a ton of money, hoping to get a huge crowd, like 130,000. So how about they add a ton of seating, seat people on the track, and we play Iowa each year in Newton, with something like 110,000 able to attend... It will never happen, just an idea...

Considering seating right now is only 30,000 I think it may be awhile.

They are going to increase it to at lest 70,000 for races.

Wouldn't the seating be too far away from the action? Just my thought. I like to be close!

I thought the infield was filled with the road course and a short track (I may be wrong, never been there...) Even if the infield was clear and they marked it off as a football field, would we want to play on a field that isn't all-football-all-the-time? Oh, I guess we do play at Kinnick this year...

Re: Out There Iowa v. ISU Idea

It would work at Bristol (the original proposal) since the track is only 1/2 mile and is already completely enclosed. Iowa Speedway is 7/8 mile, so everything is more spread out.

In 2005, track owner Bruton Smith made a public offer of $20 million apiece to the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech to schedule a non-conference college football game between the powerhouse Volunteers and Hokies' programs. Smith suggested that grass could be grown in the infield section of the racetrack. Virginia Tech showed much interest and nearly agreed to the proposal but Tennessee on the other hand showed little or no interest and in fact avoided the offer which made this possibility ultimately fall by the wayside.

If a football game was held at BMS, it would undoubtedly draw over 150,000 spectators, which would break all previous American team sports records for attendance. The track's location near the Virginia/Tennessee state line puts BMS about 125 miles (201 km) from Tech's campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, and about 110 miles (180 km) from the UT campus in Knoxville, Tennessee. However, holding a football game at the site would now seem highly impractical following the recent construction of the aforementioned scoring pylon and four-sided video screen in the middle of the infield.

No, you don't give up home field advantage for a rivalry game!

The only thing I'd be for is a "Big 4" basketball tourney at Wells Fargo Arena every year with ISU, Iowa, UNI, and Drake playing a round robin. That would be sold out easily and create a great atmosphere. Pollard has even gone on record saying he supports the idea if they other schools would come on board with it.

Good points...I don't follow racing at all, just pick up bits and pieces then make up the rest... Back to the drawing board...

ech. mixing racing and football...no thanks. I had a hard enough time swallowing race day at Jack Trice. It is such a minor league baseball gimmick.

Fun idea! I would be against it, because then I'd have to step foot in Newton.

The infield isn't large enough to play a football game on...there is on the homestretch but its got a huge asphalt oval on it.

Plus there is probably a lot more involved to a D1 football field than just an area of grass and some paint.

No way would I want to trade home field every other year to play in Newton. No offense to Newton, but, it's not JTS baby.
