    Kicking situation

This may be the biggest improvement on the team from last year, and many past years for that matter. We know that the punting game is solid and the new PKs will likely turn some of our close Ls into Ws due to field position, points on the board, and game momentum.

    Special Teams Highlights
-PK Zach Guyer and PK Grant Mahoney went a combined 7-for-8 during team field goal work, the only miss a block by DL Mike Tate.
    - Guyer connected on field goals of 25 yards (straight on), 37 yards (right hash), 42 yards (straight on) and 47 yards (left hash). His 47-yarder came with the entire team and coaching staff circled around him making noise, hoping to rattle the freshman, although to no avail.
    - Mahoney was equally as impressive, kicking field goals of 27 yards (right hash), 37 yards (right hash) and 42 yards (straight on).

Sounds like they just need to work on elevating the ball without the tee...

This is what pumps me up about Guyer. Not only kicking good, but kicking good under pressure.

I reserve judgement on the new kickers until they have a game winning field goal opportunity.

Almost anything would be an improvement over the last 8 years--except for one game last year.

Look for Guyer to do both kickoffs and FG's

    Re: Kicking situation

If either or both turn out to be above average kickers this year, that bodes well for the future. Maybe we red shirt one after this year and get 5 years of solid kicking. That would be a huge improvement.

Better yet, lets just score touchdowns so we don't have to attempt field goals.

    Re: Kicking situation

Not to rain on everyone's parade but Brian Jansen (yeah, remember him?) always talked about how he could nail kicks in practice but just couldn't hit them in games.

Until they walk on that field and boot one through and follow it up with a tougher one I am reserving judgment.

    Re: Kicking situation

I'm far more interested in what is going on on kickoffs.

Making field goals is very important, don't get me wrong. It's the difference between a MUCH more impressive last 8 years or so, and what we had. Outside of that, though, what killed us last year was field position.

Absolutely false. Both kickers are doing outstanding. My math may be fuzzy, but i believe Mahoney leads Guyer in the scrimmages as far as FG % goes and also leads with the farthest boot (50 yards). They havent even posted how any kickoffs are going. I'm lookin for one to kickoff and the other to do the fg's. They both seem to be struggling getting the ball up in the air as they look to make the transition from a tee to the groud. Unless youre in the practices with both kickers, I think well all find out whos doing the kicking when next Thursday rolls around.

    Re: Kicking situation

If you ever watched Brett in warm ups you didn't think he could miss. He looked like a fantastic kicker than. But game time is always different from practice. Lets wait to see what they do in teh game. Hopefullt it will be adequate this year.
