    720p Question

I bought a LCD 720p tv a couple of weeks ago and when watching the Olympics I notice sometimes the picture looks like squares. Is this becuase the of the extreme close ups moving quickly or what? I have watched football replays and NFL pre-season football and have not noticed this.

    Re: 720p Question

Sometimes it's just the signal. I've seen it a few times too.
Think of it like streaming video. The faster the action the bigger the file so sometimes between the satellites and your box, things don't transfer as fast as we'd all like.

    Re: 720p Question

You are noticing artifacting, which is usually the result of too low a bitrate for the codec at a given resolution. The bitrate could be too low due to problems with your signal, or it could be too low intentionally (i.e. overcompressing the channel by the provider to save bandwidth).

    Re: 720p Question

Channel 13 in Des Moines is the worst channel (in my experience) with this problem. I don't know what their deal is but it seems like I have more issues with that HD channel then any of the other channels I watch in HD.

Are you watching it over-the-air HD, or via Dish?

If it's over-the-air, it's likely either NBC's problem, or there was a temporary issue with your signal.

via dish, it's possible that Dish could be compressing the signal and you might be noticing that.

I have been watching thru the Dish but will try watching over the air tonight to see if there is a diff.

    Thanks

    Re: 720p Question

I see quite a bit of artificating. Especially during the gymnastics and diving. I thought that it was my TV, but sounds like it could be a combination.

It's almost certainly not your TV.
