    Offensive Line

In one of the practice reports McFarland lists Stephens as a starter at guard. Has Big Reggie out performed KO? There has been so many rave reviews on KO that it kind of suprised me. Long term KO has a lot of upside but I actually feel a little better with another returning starter in the line-up to start the season.

Anyone else concerned about having a 270# starting center. Hopefully he is the most technically sound lineman in the country.

I'm just glad that it seems like we might actually be building depth at the OL.

I dunno about "most technically sound", but with his quickness he's sure going to add a lot to the offense by pulling on run plays and helping pass block where needed.

Hopefully he'll do a Dedrick and be 290+ as a senior.

But 272 isn't bad--especially with the players on either side of him. I seem to recall Oklahoma having a 275 pound center a few of years back--and Adrian Peterson sure didn't seem to mind at all.

As far as KO, Reggie had a great deal of potential, after all, he went to a small high school, is very bright, and was only sixteen when he signed. It was apparent that the coaching staff was attempting to motivate him over the winter, and I have a feeling they'd only do that if there was a reason to motivate him. As in, unrealized potential.

Even if Reggie starts, I'm sure KO will play a lot anyway--and just think how much better that depth will allow both players to be.

    Re: Offensive Line

While I'm in the camp of taking these updates from camp/practice with a grain of salt, I think the important thing to remember is what Coach Chiz has been saying all along. Every spot is up for grabs. Just because you started/played in prior years does not guarantee you will this season.

KO and Baysinger have been on our radar for quite a while, so we've all had visions of them reaching the top and starting/playing for this team. However, do not count out those like Reggie Stephens. Going two seasons under the tutelage of Shepard and the whole coaching staff can only make one a better player, and the limit of that is how that player decides to motivate himself and accept the direction provided by the staff (see Tuba Rubin).

So when names like Knapp and Hicks come up, let's only be surprised and pleased that our players are improving, the talent level is rising, and the competition thing is proving to be a positive thing for this team.

Also, keep in mind we lose a fair number of OL after this season. You can never have enough depth at any position.

    Re: Offensive Line

Hopefully this is the start of a solid group of OL. In Mac's last 4 years the OL was a train wreck. There was absolutely no depth at all. I remember the backup center was the starting guard or something crazy like that. I also remember whenever a sub came in it was an automatic offsides or blown up play. Let's hope those things are just bad memories.

also, the majority of defenses run in the big 12 put the center out cutting off a linebacker or double teaming a DT. rarely will he have to go against a bigger DT one on one.

Happy to hear about Stephens actually. Watching him, he plays with a nasty streak, which is what you need on the O-Line. Seems like a great kid too, I see his family at most home games, really nice people.

I was just about to type that Reggie plays pretty nasty. I thought our best olineman last year.
