    Athletic Department Org Chart

GoCycylones reports that Matt McGettigan, strength and conditioning coach, and Mike Motl, Video Coordinator, are likely to remain. Are they in the football "department" or do they also serve other sports? e.g. do MBB and WBB have their own strength and conditioning coaches or do they use McGettigan? My initial, rather uninformed instinct, is that "strength and conditioning" is what is lacking in the senior laden OL. Correct me if you think otherwise. This is an important function. For years, the strength and conditioning coach at Nebraska was credited with making 5th year home grown linemen into all conference performers.

If they answer to the football coach, does their retention suggest anything about the transition?

Can you post link to that story? Coach Mac has said numerous times that McGettigan is one the best strength & conditioning coaches in the country. I hope he is able to stay with ISU.

    Re: Athletic Department Org Chart

From what I have heard the OL performance has nothing to do with strength. It's been said that Mcgetty is a great strength coach and it would be bad to lose him.

He was assistant strength coach at Notre Dame before coming to ISU and had the opportunity to go back as head of strength and conditioning but chose to stay at ISU.

He would be sorely missed if he left.

Didn't he win Condition Coach of the year at one point?

Yah, from what I've been told he is becoming a national figure in the profession. To me it's great news he is staying!

I don't post on this site very often, but I felt obligated to say that Coach Getty is one of the best Strength coaches bar none in football. I have seen Getty turn boys from High School into Monsters (See Carstens and Moorehead for example). He is someone who takes his job very seriously and is continuously coming up with new techniques to help the players reach their full strength and speed potential. I will guarantee that the woes of this season are 0% due to Getty!!!!

I believe he was national strength coach of the year in 2002, or something like that.

    Re: Athletic Department Org Chart

Coach McGettigan is the only coach that did his job this year or in past years. Ask Jordan Carstens if he thinks McGettigan was a good coach. The kid weighed 205 lbs when he graduated high school, then walked on, and i think he is playing in that league that only has the best players. Stupid post man.

It's pretty cool to watch McGettigan run the pre-game warm-ups.

I can't speak in any certainly about Iowa State's situation, but more times than not, the head football strength coach generally heads the entire department at a University. So, while other sports have their own coaches, (and some may overlap between other, lower-budget sports) they all ultimately answer to the head football strength coach.

As I said, this is just what happens in general... not sure about the situation at State.

FB Needs a New Strength Coach

If McGettigan is going to remain overseeing ISU's strength programs I have no problem.

However, the FB team needs a new strength coach for 2 reasons:

    1) The strength coach is the guy players have the most contact with during the off season. If McGettigan is the FB strength coach I don't see a new attitude being promoted. I also think players would benefit from a new regiment.

    2) People cite examples like Moorhead & Carstens putting on weight during the college careers, but look around there are those examples at all schools. Personally, I haven't been impressed with our fitness or strength. Our o-line looks like pillsbury dough boys. Guys like Zehr, Brant, etc should have been taking off weight over the last couple years instead of adding weight.

Conversely, I look at other positions like LB & DE and over the years it doesn't seem like guys adding size. I know there are limitations based on a kids physique- but overall I've felt our stength & conditioning wasn't a strength during the Mac years.

    Re: Athletic Department Org Chart

i dont think you really have a clue. Iowa state isnt getting top recruits. We are getting the good iowa kids and the florida and texas leftovers. Look at our top two players (blythe, meyer). They had a whopping three scholarship offers between the two of them out of high school. Half of the kids we get probably wouldn't play at drake. McGettigan puts the best possible product out on the field. The o-line struggles because we run 15 yard routes, have no blocking back in the back field, and other teams do that blitz thing from time to time because we have a 3rd and 8+ at least 7-10 times a game. The strength coach doesn't coach football

Thats a little harsh. Some quality schools have usually been in the mix on our guys we get.
