Great Story on an Iowan WWII Vet

Buchenwald liberator, American hero dies at 83 - CNN.com

This is a really great story about an WWII veteran and Iowan who just passed away.

He was part of 4 man team that discovered one of the largest concentration camps in Germany. He just recently told his story for print.

We have fewer and fewer WWII vets every day, and I think it is important to get their stories before it is too late. They are/were the "Greatest Generation" after all.

Re: Great Story on an Iowan WWII Vet

I believe I had the honor of meeting this gentleman in 1992, and I "think" one of his (grand)nephews was an NCO in my Cavalry troop. Sure sounds like the same guy.

Fiddler's Green just gained a great one....

Here's another great Iowan. Col Day is from Sioux City and was a Marine in WWII he later was a member of the Army reserve and Iowa Air Guard before returning to Active Duty. He was a POW in Vietnam where he won the Medal of Honor.

He is the most decorated living American.

    Check out the book "Raider!"

It's about Galen Kittleson from St. Ansgar, IA. He was with the Alamo Scouts and participated in more POW camp raids than any other member in our military's history.

He participated in two different raids in WWII and then again in Vietnam. The two best known would be The Bataan Death March and Son Tey in Vietnam.

Have you seen the movie The Great Raid that came out a couple of years ago? I loved it!

It was based on the book "Ghost Soldiers." That is one of my favorite books. It's much better than the movie.

You should make an exception in this case. If you liked the movie, you will LOVE the book.

There are certainly all kinds of heroes living among us, from that war and many others.
