Wow - I'd certainly say someone has sour grapes...

Re: Did Wayne Morgan Write His Own Wikipedia Article?

I am sure Wayne Morgan isn't the one writing his wiki article. There are quite a few people on here who will defend him and there are some who would fit into the catagory mentioned in the article. Obviously Wayne doesnt hate Iowa too much, he still lives in Ames.

Re: Did Wayne Morgan Write His Own Wikipedia Article?

Yeah, that writeup certainly looks like it was done by someone with an ax to grind.

Now, back to opening this old can of worms! Yes, he won some games with an up-tempo style that at times was quite exciting, but to those of us that watched a lot of games under him, the team clearly lacked discipline, fundamentals were almost non-existant, and looking back at the amount of talent that he had on those teams, it wouldn't be hard to argue that even given our success, his teams under-performed. I don't think he was building anything great in the long term.

The wiki article also seemed to slam the fanbase for not accepting the kinds of players he was recruiting, but given the mass exodus that occured when Wayne left, I think it proved the skeptics right.

Re: Did Wayne Morgan Write His Own Wikipedia Article?

    Well...

Look people, I'm on record as being a WM defender, not because I think he was a great coach, but more because I get damn sick and tired of the Wayne haters trying to make up their own version of the facts when they write that he never won a single basketball game at Iowa State (yes, an exaggeration, but not by much); it's an attitude that I feel is promoted in part by the founder of this website.

Even when we were successful during his first two years, WM did receive criticism from at least a vocal (on-line) minority of fans who didn't like the "streetball" or the perceived lack of discipline. I distinctly remember reading CycloneReport.com after we beat a ranked Oklahoma team during his second season to halt a losing streak at least one person still ripping him to shreds AFTER the victory!

Whether you agree with it or not, WM certainly had (and still has) his share of detractors. Yes, the Wikipedia article is quite biased, but that doesn't mean it lacks articles of truth.

Re: Did Wayne Morgan Write His Own Wikipedia Article?

Don't these threads always go the same way? You have a group of rational people who realize Morgan wasn't awful and did some decent things in his three years here.
Then you have the people who have an excessive amount of disrespect for what he accomplished and claim from their ivory towers that he was the worst coach in the history of college basketball.

Where's the beating of the dead horse pic when you need it most...

Re: Did Wayne Morgan Write His Own Wikipedia Article?

I have to agree that Morgan shouldn't have been shoved out like that. His style of play is more similar to pro leagues and I do think a lot of the fanbase was uncomfortable with the players and I'd hear several call them "thugs", which I don't think was fair.

That said, I am happy with McD as the coach, but his style of play is more "college style", and I think a lot of the fanbase here is more comfortable seeing this style of play.

Re: Did Wayne Morgan Write His Own Wikipedia Article?

I don't think anybody had any problem with the players he recruited, they had problems with the way they played. That's a stylistic preference and I understand that. When I heard the "streetball" stuff it was usually after a terrible turnover, or Stinson talking trash like it was going out of style. I understand that as well. There were a lot of things that were frustrating about the Wayne tenure, but I still maintain every coach deserves five years.

Fanbase can decide for its self, but administrative decision was made because the NCAA was several appeals by ISU from declaring us ineligible for post season play.

So you are saying we would likely have more wins, a more fun style of basketball to watch, and the same amount of postseason appearances (0)?

    Just fanning the flames :)

Re: Did Wayne Morgan Write His Own Wikipedia Article?

    I love this:

Wayne Morgan: Mastering the 2-3 zone defense; and Wayne Morgan: The Philosophy of changing defenses and the 2-3 zone.
We did anything but "master" the 2-3 other than create steals but give up about 3 times what we got from the trapping 2-3. Seemed like especially in his 3rd season you could pretty much bank on any team playing us to get easy layups or wide open 3's in the corner because of this defense. It works when you use it in moderation but when you are always going for the trap teams figured it out and exploited it's weaknesses plus I don't think playing a zone 90% of the game is teaching kids the fundamentals of defense that man to man does.

I don't hate Wayne but I didn't see his style of coaching as a good fit for ISU and I really hated the lack of discipline the team showed at times. Stinson was basically given a free pass to do whatever he wanted even if it meant he turned the ball over 5 consecutive times.
