    8-13-08 Olympics Thread

I have no shame in the girls getting the silver. Considering the last second adversity for their team, they did great. I'm pumped for Shawn's all around. Numbers and certificates can claim those chinese girls are 16, but common, just look at them! My 6 year old niece looks the same age.

Yeah, it is pretty annoying to watch the Chinese win when it appears that they are in violation of the rules. I heard on the news this morning that in several previous international competitions one of the Chinese team members was listed having a birth date in 1993, and now magically she is in the Olympics with a birth date of 1992 and the government has removed all documents with reference to 1993. How do you do anything about it when their government is in on it and providing false documentation? It is just frustrating.

It's just common sense to me. SHE LOOKS 8! I wish you could do some sort of blood test that tells age.

    Re: 8-13-08 Olympics Thread

I'll say this much. When watching gymnastics live in person, some of the girls look to be 2 or so years older than when you actually see them in person. Since T.V. makes you look older, and those Chinese girls already look 12 or 14 years old, I'm curious to know how young they actually look in person.

There's no doubt that at least a couple of them are not of age!

Can't they just check their teeth like when you buy a horse?

I think the poll question is slightly in error because I believe that they only need to turn 16 sometime during the year in which the Olympics are held. In other words, I think they can technically be 15 and still compete. That being said, I still don't think there is any way that they are old enough.

What I don't get is that Shawn was coming in as the best all around gymnast. From watching her both nights, her routines overall seemed just as good or better than the Chinese girls yet she gets crapped on with her scores. Her balance beam routines were phenominal.

    Re: 8-13-08 Olympics Thread

It still blows my mind after hearing last night that the Chinese Gov't plucks chosen kids out of homes at 3 yrs of age and then they get to see their families maybe once a year while they train to be olympians. That is sad.

And did anyone else want to grab the camera man who wouldn't give the US gymnast that messed up a moment to pull herself together and choke the SOB???? I felt sorry for her anyway and then this the guy just sits there going paparazzi(sp) on her. I know she brings on the crap doing what she's doing, but there should be some sort of compassion, or at least a place that she can duck out to get her bearings back. Maybe it's just the Father in me, but man I felt sorry for her last night.

If you saw the qualifying rounds, she was even more flawless on the balance beam than she was tonight. The Austrian judge gave her an 8.5 or 1.5 points worth of deductions. Bella Korolly (sp?) said that the changes in scoring had not served their purpose of cleaning up the corruption in gymnastics judging.

What's funny is that Shawn Johnson is just 16 and looks like she could be the mother of a couple of the Chinese gymnasts (if Shawn was to cohabitate with a Chinese gymnast).

    Re: 8-13-08 Olympics Thread

I understand there are rules that say they need to be 16. That said, if the Chinese have to use 12 year olds to win, so be it. They have to live with it. If we want to claim to be the best, we need to beat the best. I have a much larger issue if they were using performance enhancing drugs. Just one guys opinion.

    Re: 8-13-08 Olympics Thread

I knew this would happen. U.S wouldn't get gold so we would start making excuses. How about we focus on the real problem? The U.S. wasn't as good as China.

Who cares whether these girls are 16? I hope they are 16 because I'd be more embarrassed if I just got beat by a 12 year old.

Hey, it's whatever their passport says...

It's my understanding those girls are taken into the program at the age of three and then subsequently only visit their parents once a year while they are in the "program". Mmmmm.... I can smell the freedom (or lack thereof).
