    Google Problems

PC World - Google Apps Hit by Prolonged Gmail Access Problem

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Microsoft had a group of hired hackers to introduce doubt in the minds of people thinking about depending on Google Apps.

I've been having issues getting into Hotmail with Safari. Makes you wonder if Microsoft is doing something sneaky...

This happened to me yesterday afternoon - I could not get into gmail.

Just proof to all MS haters out there, that other OS's and open source software are not free from errors.

I find that highly unlikely. The volume of hackers that it would take to create issues on Goodle servers is huge, and there's no way it could be kept secret.

I think Bostin's right - all OS's, including open source have issues. MS is evident because it is constantly under attack - and is the OS that roughly 95% of the applications in the world run on (at least those were the numbers around 2000).

Yeah, there is no way it could happen, other than individual hackers have gotten into everything from the CIA to banks.

I am not saying they are doing it, I just said I wouldn't be surprised.

I like what Google is doing, but everyones love fest with them will eventually taper off. I myself am a fan of their direction. I just think they are going to start becoming a target much like MS.

    Re: Google Problems

I have had gmail for two years and its the best email program I have had. And the uptime on it has been unreal.

I have had aol, yahoo, hotmail and thunderbird through the years, and gmail is tops.

Hotmail always seemed to be going down.

So they have had some issues the last day or so, but on the whole, I can't imagine their uptime being bettered by anyone

I entertained the thought for a moment after I first read it. But there's a big difference between an individual hacking a system and a company like MS hiring hackers to bring down the servers of the competitors.

That said, there are organized hackers that get after MS - but I highly doubt it's Google or Sun or any other large corporation bankrolling them.

This whole hacking thing is crazy. For me, the potential for someone to hack into my system and gather client data is a real threat that could put me out of business - would put me out of business. I spend a ton of money on security to do my best to prevent it from happening. It's nuts that a little guy like me has to do that, but it is and has been the reality for awhile.

    Re: Google Problems

If I spent the money it takes to protect my databases, exchange server, etc. to the top level I would put myself out of business because I would be spending too much money and time protecting it. If I get hacked you are correct I would also go out of business, so I guess I have to take my chances.

    Re: Google Problems

Perhaps it's not MS bankrolling the hacking, but I wouldn't doubt that certain foreign governments are bankrolling some of those hackers trying to get into US computers.

Are there any international provisions that allow for the investigation and prosecution of hackers across international boundaries? Also, within the US, what are the typical punishments given out for those caught hacking computers?

One of the biggest pluses about Gmail is free POP3 access. Lot of those other big name "free" email providers will make you sign up for a month subscription just to get POP3 capability.

Gmail is still in Beta. I don't think anyone should be using a beta for production work, though I find it perfectly reasonable for my personal e-mail.
