Why Do We Keep Playing the Thursday Night Games?

I would like to know why we keep starting the season with a Thursday night game? I could understand if it was televised ($$$), contractual or if it was more heavily attended. However, I don't think attendance was or will be good and this type of television coverage (does Fox College Sports channel really count?) do we get any revenue from it? What it comes down to is - Is the Athletic Department making more money on the Thursday night game than on a Saturday afternoon game? Has anyone posed this question to JP and got a response?

re: Why Do We Keep Playing the Thursday Night Games?

I think they really need to work something out with the University and classes if they continue this. I know that football isn't the most important thing in the world, but if you're going to hold a game during the week, the students need some time to be able to take part in the experience. I know I had a lab last fall on Thursday that ran from 4 to 6pm. So, I handed in my homework and left for the tailgating lots at 4:10. It would be nice if they would suspend afternoon classes on that Thursday or better yet, cancel class on Friday!

re: Why Do We Keep Playing the Thursday Night Games?

The company line from Pollard the last couple years has been that too many students and families are out of town on Labor Day weekend, and having the game on a Thursday night improves the chances of a high turnout. I'm not sure if there really are that many students that go back home after just a week of class, and if they did, I doubt they'd be the ones who attend football games regularly anyway. I know having games on Thursdays puts a strain on working folk with families, but personally, I love getting a jump on the football season.

    It's Cyclone football, be happy.

That will never happen, and probably shouldn't. It is, after all, an institution for higher learning first.

The SDSU game is televised and we get huge crowds for these games.

You're actually in college to learn something?

I agree, I'm tired of the Thursday kickoff's - it eats into my PTO when I have to burn two days of it for one game. If there's no relevant TV for it, why have it on Thursday?

They do it just to upset all of the people that travel to games. JP just wants to make sure you get your panties in a bunch.

re: Why Do We Keep Playing the Thursday Night Games?

I think the point is that attendance would be worse on the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend, when students go home and people have other plans.

    Just a guess...

I agree. Last year I had to work (bad luck) and just barely made kick off. This year I have a lab from 3-5 PM. It is the first week of classes and I hope it doesn't take more than 15 minutes to go through stuff and then they let us go so we can tailgate! I guess I'll just have to wait and see...

Anyways, I like the Thursday night game in general. I know it is a pain in the butt to a lot of people, but it is great for students to have the extended holiday weekend.

re: Why Do We Keep Playing the Thursday Night Games?

I honestly don't see what the big gripe about Thursday night games are. If it gives us a better chance of getting on TV, all the better.

Personally I also enjoy that first Thurs. game. I'll be heading up right after work.

You need two days of PTO to get to Ames from Ankeny? Are you riding a big wheel?

I'm aware why I'm in college. At the same time, I paid for my ticket and I would like to be able to use that ticket. I'm not saying I expect the University to cater to football fans, but I am saying it would be nice. I, personally, love the Thursday night game. I sure makes it tough to concentrate during class on that Thursday, but it makes it all worth it once kickoff starts. It's good that it's during the first week of classes so students don't have to worry about tests, etc.
