Re: Movement growing to standardize basketball rules

I have mixed feelings on the FIBA lane. It really discourages low post play and is difficult for a guy like Dwight Howard to score. The US lane (rectangle) doesn't allow for as much penetration and the game isn't nearly as open.

I vote they should have a a 37 Foot 4-Point line installed starting in college. That would be insane.

And a 20 point full court line.

It would be funny seeing teams bomb full courters to catch up in blowouts.

Re: Movement growing to standardize basketball rules

This is a debate that seems to come up every time during olympic basketball. The interesting thing is, as I recall, after our disappointing showing in 2004, it seemed like the talk was changing the NBA to be more similar to international rules. This time around it seems the international community is actually moving to become more like the NBA with a rectangular lane and a deeper 3 point line. This would seem like it could only help us in international competition, right?

24 second shot clock in college, and an even deeper 3 point line would be weird.

Re: Movement growing to standardize basketball rules

I never understood why FIBA rules are different from NBA rules considering basketball was invented here.

Keep it the same. I enjoy seeing the different rules. Just like the different rules in wrestling.

What is this, MTV Rock-n-Jock Hoops? Maybe they'll lower two additional baskets from the ceiling, worth 25 and 50 points respectively.

Re: Movement growing to standardize basketball rules

I think it should be standard. It is really the only olympic sport where it seems like the dimensions are different in every country.

Re: Movement growing to standardize basketball rules

Sorry to thread-jack but on a similar note, can someone give me ONE good reason that MLB doesn't have standard for field size/dimensions? Why is every park a different size? That makes zero sense to me.

While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”

I think it's different in hockey as well. NHL rinks are sized differently than they are in international competition (int'l rinks are MUCH wider).

Tradition. That and I don't think there's another sport out there where the field size is absolutely dependent on the shape/configuration of the stadium. What are you going to do - force every team/stadium to spend millions of dollars to retrofit each stadium to conform to a universal standard? Won't happen. That and there's the certain "house rules" aspect that baseball allows for stadiums. For instance, a ball that hits an overhead speaker in the Metrodome is treated differently than one in Tropicana Field (one is a live ball, the other is a dead ball).

Finally, with the exception of the home run walls and out-of-play walls, all fields ARE standardized fields - in every stadium it's 90 feet between bases, 60-some-odd feet from the pitchers' mound to the plate, the mound is a certain height, the infield is a certain size, etc. Deciding that home run walls must be the exact same size is not only unnecessary, it's an impossibility.
