    Traveling to Des Moines...

I am going on a business trip the rest of the week to Des Moines.

Where (other than that state fair, obviously) would you suggest stopping?

Awesome places to eat, places to pick up new Cyclone gear, etc.

Is it hard to get a yard sign from the university, if I stop in Ames quick?

    Any input would be great!

Scheels at Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines has a pretty nice selection of ISU gear.

I think they are out of those yard signs if I remember correctly. If you happen to come up to Ames stop by the Memorial Union and you will be stunned by their vast collection of clothing, flags, cups, shot glasses, stickers, window decals, wall stars, everything!

The best ISU stuff in Des Moines would be at Scheel's (Jordan Creek Mall in WDM) or the ISU Bookstore - both places I stop at when I travel into town. If the Machine Shed is anything like the one in Davenport, you won't be disappointed.

As for yard signs, last I heard they're out.

Yard signs were all gone months ago, so you can't get one from Athletics. If you wanted to steal one from somebody's yard, that's certainly an option.

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

I would recommend checking out downtown after the fair. You might be pleasantly surprised at all the activity around Court Ave. now. The Legends down there is the same chain as what's up in Ames and there are some other good eateries as well.

Tasty Tacos for a quick/cheap meal. You can't go wrong with the flour tacos.

The Machine Shed used to be one of my favorite places to go but the last 4 or 5 times we've gone there, the service had been absolutely terrible. So I would not recommend it to a friend.

If you go to the fair, check out the ISU booth in the Varied Industries building. They have a lot of new logo stuff. They have this year's football "I am a Cyclone" shirts for $10. They also have the Cardinal/Gold Rules for $10.

I didn't get to go to Tasty's this trip, but I did have an awesome ribeye at Iowa Beef Steakhouse. Plus I picked up a t-shirt from there so I can advertise for them!

Perhaps we need to "share" some of the customer service at our Machine Shed with yours. My biggest complaint is sometimes they're way too "happy" and are on you every 5 minutes or so. Just let us eat, lady...

    Re: Traveling to Des Moines...

Eating and drinking: Downtown, I like Sbracco, it just opened, is on Court avenue right by the river. Great food. More casual, Hessen Haus is always fun. There is a People's in DSM now, right downtown. Great atmosphere, lots of ISU people there still. If I was you, go on downtown, park the car, and just walk around the Court avenue section. You won't believe it. I also like Dos Rios for Mexican, some great fish tacos. The East Village is fun at night, I especially like the Grand Piano Bistro. Live music almost every night.

ISU stuff:Scheel's is always great. Also, I like the Stadium. They have a log of the new IState Logo stuff. They are located downtown in the skywalk, as well as just south of Valley West Mall, next to active endeavors. They usually have great Under Armour merchandise with ISU logos. For lunches, all the Hungry Hobo's are very good, while Palmer's deli is my absolute favorite. There is one on 50th St, just north of Westown parkway, and also one in the skywalk downtown. If you like a club, get the Marshall Field. Best sandwich in town.

On a side note, Jeremy, is there any chance of creating a board with destinations on it that people could post to? I know there are other things like that on the net, I just trust the opinions of people here a lot more. Or maybe it already exists on here?

Why did you have to go and mention Tasty Taco's? That is the one place I really miss eating at when I worked in DSM.

    Re: Traveling to Des Moines...

Thanks for your help! I didn't expect to get as many responses as I did.

I do agree that it would be good to have "points of interest" on here for people that travel to the Ames/Des Moines areas, since there are visiting teams on this board that make road trips. It would be helpful.

    Thanks again!
