    Americans killed at Olympics

"BEIJING, China (CNN) -- A Chinese attacker stabbed two Americans, killing the man and wounding the woman, who were attending the Olympic Games on Saturday, according to the U.S. Olympic Committee."

American at Olympics stabbed to death - CNN.com

Why does the cynic in me feel that this is going to be swept under the rug by the US and Chinese governments as fast as possible....?

I don't think violent crime is swept under the rug in China. It is VERY uncommon, and I think it gets plenty of media attention.

    Re: Americans killed at Olympics

These olympics have been completely hyped as china's coming out party...and they also don't like to be embarrassed...

I will be curious to see if our fearless leader makes a statement.

If the guy wouldnt have killed himself, China would have probably drawn and quartered him in the square.

Father-in-law of the men's coach, father of a player from the 2004 womens' volleyball team (as NBC just reported on-air)

I love how China has ordered it's security to put an end to anyone speaking out against the country so they can promote their "peace"

According to the Boston Globe, Chinese citizens are being kept quiet:
Many neighbors declined to discuss anything about what they know or saw, amid the swarm of international media that arrived at the scene within a couple of hours of the alleged incident.
"We know some things but we can't talk," said one resident. Throughout this site, police officers were stationed, as well as neighborhood security volunteers who seemed to be watching closely who was talking to reporters.

How do we really know? Our country parades our villains through the national news like some kind of celebrities. If we did not do that, but instead locked the media down in those circumstances, we may have a completely different perspective of crime in our own country. Obviously, though, they can clamp down on elements of their society without evidence of any kind, so they surely have a better handle on it than more free societies.
