    IOWA STATE FOOTBALL
    Moorehead cashes in

    Shawn Moorehead
    ISU senior

At ISU for his degree, walk-on walks away as school sacks leader

    By Jeff Johnson

    The Gazette

AMES — He was going to attend Iowa State University regardless, primarily to get
that mechanical engineering degree. Football just kind of evolved for Shawn Moorehead. Evolved in a big way.
The senior from Mason City set the school record for career sacks two weeks ago in a 41-10 home loss to Kansas. A bright spot on a dreary day, he was credited with 2 1/2 sacks, along with a forced fumble and interception.
That took his career total to 17 1/2 sacks, surpassing Reggie Hayward. That’s a nice career for a tall, skinny,
gawky kid from Newman High School who ‘‘had a Mod Squad hairdo’’ and not much meat on his bones when he arrived on campus.
‘‘He didn’t look like a Big 12 football player,’’ Iowa State Coach Dan McCarney said. ‘‘But he wanted to come here, he was coming to school at Iowa State anyway. We watched tape on him from Mason City Newman. (His coach) Mike Dirksen said great things about him, said, ‘You’ll love him. Whether he can play or not someday, I don’t know. I think he will.’ ‘‘But I remember what he looked like coming out of high school. He looked worse than I did, and that’s bad.’’ Moorehead’s hairstyle might be debatable. But he wasn’t a big kid, other than that 6-foot-4 frame.
‘‘I would say coming out of high school, I weighed 195 or 200 pounds, depending on the day,’’ Moorehead said. ‘‘They told me the first day that they were going to get me up to 250 pounds, and I just
    laughed.’’
Iowa State’s weight and strength trainers got the last laugh. Moorehead said he gained 20 pounds his first year and gradually got to 250. ‘‘It was a lot of eating,’’ Moorehead said. ‘‘I ate four meals a day. Even when I wasn’t hungry, I’d be eating peanut butter sandwiches.’’
Now he’s eating up opposing quarterbacks.
Originally tried as an outside linebacker, Moorehead didn’t play his red-shirt freshman year, then surprised everyone
with a solid sophomore season that included 4 1/2 sacks and a couple of forced fumbles. He had six sacks last season and has 9 1/2 this season to break the record.
‘‘ I heard that, and I couldn’t believe it,’’ said senior wide receiver Austin Flynn. ‘‘This guy came in, what, 200 pounds maybe. There was no way he was going to pass Reggie Hayward.’’
    Yet he did.
‘‘Right now, it’s not something I’m thinking much about,’’ Moorehead said. ‘‘I’ll probably think about it more once the season is over, but it’s not something that’s on my mind. Just getting a win is what I’m thinking about.’’ ‘‘ What a story he is,’’ McCarney said. ‘‘Walk-on to career leader in the history of Iowa State football in sacks. And it’s not like we’re out there not playing some pretty
    good football teams.’’

Unfortunetly he was in Berryman's shadow until this year.....

He was mostly known as a wrestler in high school. Goes to show wrestlers can make great defensive players.

He is a great guy and a stand up rep. of ISU.

Not really pertinent, but hope you guys enjoy this little anecdote...

Moorehead is a cousin of a buddy of mine. We used to go to the games and chant, "What do we want? MOORE - HEAD, What do we crave? MOORE - HEAD". Subtle, I know.

Glad to see he's been performing well on and off the field. :)

True. He does his job well without all the self-promotion. Way to go Shawn!

Re: IOWA STATE FOOTBALL--Moorehead cashes in

It would be a dandy if Moorehead and Kock played on the same side of the ball.

Kock the fullback and Moorehead the runningback. Here's Pete with the call...

The Cyclones come out in the I with Kock and Moorehead, first and goal at the Hawkeye 3 yard line.

Meyer takes the snap, fakes quick to Kock and then gives it to Moorehead. Kock plows through the hole...Moorehead is close behind...TOUCH-DOWN CYCLONES!

Kock and Moorehead, a winning combination!

Well, it would be something like that.

Im in the same grade as his younger brother, and from what I can tell, he is going to be as good as Shawn if not better. We will see as he still has one more year of football left.

Wow! That is impressive. Reggie was a monster on the end, for Moorehead to accomplish that speaks volumes about him.
