    Electronic cigarettes

Well, I went ahead and finally bought one of these things. It should be here in a couple of days, so I will check back in and let everyone knows how it works. It's called NJoy.

    Re: Electronic cigarettes

For those of us that are uninformed, what is that exactly? A stop-smoking product I assume?

Kind of......it's a rechargeable cigarette that heats nicotine packets, and you breath in the nicotine without any of the other harmful substances that are in cigarettes. It heats the air, and you exhale water vapor instead of smoke. You can buy packets in various strengths, so I suppose you could gradually reduce strength to help you quit.

    Re: Electronic cigarettes

So do you still puff out "smoke"? Sounds weird, seems like it'd be easier to just quit.

So really you could "smoke" in a bar?

That's how I heard about it. The Rag had an article about people using these to "get around" the smoking ban. All you are expelling is water vapor which is harmless, so there's no reason you couldn't use them anywhere.

    Re: Electronic cigarettes

Wow, you don't see a problem with that? I mean addiction-wise?

Couldn't you just chew the gum or whatever?

No, not really. I mean, I've been smoking for 22 years, so I'm guessing the addiction is there already. The benefit I see here is not that I can smoke anywhere I want- it's that using these eliminates the carcinogens involved.

By the way, the gum is awful! Imagine chewing on a piece of soft plastic with very little taste, and if you chew it too quickly, it tastes like a mouth full of pepper.

    Re: Electronic cigarettes

More questions from a non-smoker. How much do they cost vs. traditional cigarettes? Has anyone objected to the use that you know of? Why doesnt everyone just smoke these then, the nicotine isnt the cause of cancer correct?

That sounds like a pretty incredible invention... satisfying the nicotine craving and also the physical habit of smoking.... let me know how it works!

The upfront cost is the tough part (I spent about $200 for the starter kit and a one month supply). A 5 pack, which is supposedly equivalent to 10 packs of cigarettes, is about $24 vs a carton for around $43. From what I understand, nicotine is roughly as dangerous as caffeine when it's by itself. Could be wrong there though.
