Pondering a potential late season Cubs pick-up

So, I just got to thinking about the possibility of the Cubs picking up Jacque Jones again. Call me crazy, if you like. He was having just an awful season for both Detroit and Florida, before being released by both. I'm not sure about his contract issue, but I'm sure it would be like Jim Edmonds', where the contract is paid, and they just have to pay JJ the league minimum. Actually, the Cubs still may be paying for part of his contract??

Who knows? Maybe heading back to Wrigley would revive his careers, as it did Edmonds'? Jacque wasn't horrible as a Cub (.285 average with 32 HR's and 140 RBI's the past two years) and I would think he could do as much or more than what Daryle Ward has provided thus far. Plus, you can actually put him in the field, unlike Ward.

Just a thought as I get ready to call it a night. What do you other Cub fans think?

Who would he replace? Daryle Ward might be washed up, but he seems like he's Piniella's guy, and I'd still take him over Jones. He may be someone to think about if there's an injury, otherwise no thanks.

Re: Pondering a potential late season Cubs pick-up

First off Jones isn't exactly a fan favorite and second who would he replace? They will already have to make a move when Wood comes off the DL and I am thinking Cotts might be the guy sent down. As far as position players Cedeno and Fontenot are about the only 2 logical guys and both have played well enough not to get demoted. I doubt Ward is cut even if he struggles. I'd rather see Hoffpauier back up before signing Jones if you want another left handed bat on the bench.

I'd say the Cubs line up is very solid right now. I don't think we should try to fix something that isn't broken.

Re: Pondering a potential late season Cubs pick-up

Well, I was thinking he could replace Ward on the roster. He batted .174 in the month of July and is barely batting .189 as a pinch hitter. He was great last year, but seems like he's been hurt most of this year.

As for Jones vs. Hoffpauir, Jones is a proven major league veteran and Hoffpauer has been in the minors for like 6 years. Hoffpuair has looked good in his limited time in Chicago, and he will be called up when the I Cubs season is over and the roster gets extended.

Like I said, though, Jones batted .285 each of the last 2 seasons (as a Cub). He's got a great attitude, and a little pop from the left side of the plate. And he's got some speed, and can play some OF if needed. Maybe when they expand the roster they could give him a shot, and see if he's got anything left. That's all I'm saying. The exact same thing I said the moment I heard that Edmonds was released. And that worked out pretty well...

Re: Pondering a potential late season Cubs pick-up

The advantage with D-Ward is that he has a great chance of putting the ball out of the park every time he steps up to the plate. Even though he has struggled this year, I'd take him over JJ any day.

Re: Pondering a potential late season Cubs pick-up

I'm very ecstatic right now with the cubs line-up. We have a team that can go out everyday and compete no matter who the hurler is. I like how Reed J. is hitting phenomenol against lefties, and Edmonds is hitting awesome against righties. That's excellent in the fact that edmonds with his age gets rest when he needs it and has a hell of a stick

Re: Pondering a potential late season Cubs pick-up

I would say that the chances of signing Jones are about as good as those to sign Bonds. I could see the Marlins possibly picking him up since they were interested in trading for him the other year or the Rays who could use a veteran OF.

Re: Pondering a potential late season Cubs pick-up

I agree that the line-up is stacked. The Cubs are attempting to make a run at the World Series, though, and you need every player clicking. If Ward is not hitting, he's worthless. You can't bring him in as a pinch runner, and you're sure as hell not going to bring him in for defensive help. Jones can be used in both situations. I would also say that their power is pretty similar...

I think that Jones got a bad rap in Chicago. And might still be with the Cubs if they hadn't won the Fukudome sweepstakes. Don't get me wrong, I'll take Fukudome over Jacque any day. Just don't think it's that crazy of a thought to bring him back. He's a good guy, and has been a pretty solid Major Leaguer for 10 years. And don't call him too old, cuz he's only a few weeks younger than me!!

He actually played for the Marlins this year, briefly, and didn't do so well...
