    Sprayed Foam Insulation

I am thinking about insulating under the floor of my three seasons porch. I was talking about this with the guys that were staining my house. One guy said to use spray on foam insulation. I guess it will defy gravity when apply and must work something like that Great Stuff foaming product. I'd never heard of or considered spray on insulation for something like this. Does anybody know anything about it? Sounds like a pretty simple solution.

The porch sits a couple of feet above the ground. I may also want to do something to close it up to block the wind, but that's a different issue for a later time. Just wondering if this spray insulation is a workable solution and where you get it.

It is cool and works really well, just make sure you NEVER want to run any additional wires/ducts, cause once you use the foam, it is sealed.

    Re: Sprayed Foam Insulation

MrsWx wants to put it in our attic but we don't know what it costs. How does it compare to regular insulation?

Good point. Thanks. I don't think that will be a show stopper, but I do a fair amount of dinking around with TV cabling and speaker wires. So it's something I need to think about.

I was talking to a contractor the other and stated that I didn't think our house was well insulated. He recommended using the spray insulation. I have no idea of the cost.

I just went to Lowes to check it out and they don't carry it. If they did they would have to also sell the equipment you need to apply it. The guy says you need to get a contractor to do it and he said it's expensive. My painter didn't mention anything like special equipment and didn't even make it sound like it would take much of the stuff to do what I had to do. I'll probably check out the Home Depot and Menards; and do a little Internet research to see what the pros and cons are for my sort of exposed, under porch configuration.

    Re: Sprayed Foam Insulation

Only a contractor will have the tools to install the spray in insulation. It is well worth the money for the comfort that will be gained.

Just run some empty conduit under the porch before you insulate it. That way you can always run some wire at a later time.

He was probably talking about the fluffy kind of spray insulation for your attic, which is a very common for an attic. This stuff is sprayed on also, but it is a foam type insulation that dries into a solid and adheres like glue.

I was hoping I could just call a good neighbor up and they would come over and do it for me.

Urethane insulation-r-6 per inch and will seal it up TIGHT. Kind of pricey but well worth the money.

    Re: Sprayed Foam Insulation

A contractor I hired to remodel my bathroom used the spray foam and it worked great. It was a very small area so he purchased some small cannisters of the spray foam from a local insulation dealer. It was two separate bottles that mixed as it sprayed, both bottles were about the size of a 2-liter pop bottle. I doubt you'll find it at Home Depot or Menards but try calling some specialty stores in your area.

I don't think your State Farm agent is qualified

In that case, he probably would have referred to it as "blown in".
