    Re: cuil

Is this the one that the person who wrote to code of also had a hand in the major search engine that google bought out back in the day?

    Re: cuil

I just read about this the other day. The developers are the one's that developed and sold the search engine to Google - and then worked for Google, apparently until the covenant not to compete expired.

On an earlier thread, sombody asked about the Nike Feel program and sebveral said they'd Google'd it and found nothing. So I tried cuil and found a bunch of stuff, although nothing related to ISU.

Who wants to bet that Microsoft will be knocking on their door very soon?

    Re: cuil

Horrible name. That might be something that doesn't allow it to have a fair shot at getting a piece of the pie.

techies will know about it, but regular joes are probably not going to remember cuil.com.

I might be wrong, but I really don't see anyone taking down Google. They have their hands in way too many innovative things to be thrown aside.

Agree. I don't see anyone overtaking google.

Apple won't overtake Microsoft, even though some folks swear by Apple as being a much better product. I am considering an Apple product the next time I get a computer, because of certain recording functionalities....but will probably always have a PC as well.

I tell my Mac-using boss that just because HE has to use the fat crayons, it doesn't mean I have to.

That is funny. Mac users are so defensive.

    Re: cuil

I just tested Cuil by doing the same search I did earlier today with Google to check out reviews for a product advertised on an infomercial. (I seldom buy from an infomercial, but am often entertained by how good they make these products sound, and quite often the reviews are pretty bad.)

Anyway Google yielded great results as always.

Cuil gave me nothing worthwhile. It wasn't even good enough to warrant a bookmark for Cuil as a search engine.

I realize one test isn't scientific, but if Cuil is any good, I'm sure I will run across it again. For now it's not worth my time.

(Regarding the infomercial reviews. For fun go check out reviews for the Video Professor. Pity the poor people that get caught up in that scam.)

I tend to agree. I tried about 5 searches and the results weren't very good.

That was my experience too. I heard someone say the important thing with search engines isn't the number of pages searched, it's how the information is organized. A search engine could check every page on the internet, but it won't matter if results don't put the best pages at the top. Cuil might be worthwhile if I'm looking for something too obscure for Google, otherwise I'm sticking with Google.
