Georgia Tech to run triple option

I had completely forgot that Paul Johnson is the new coach at Georgia Tech. Looks like he will be installing the Navy offense at GT. Not sure what I think about that, but I think the ACC has plenty of speed to shut that down.

I would be calling any of their decent WRs.... my guess is they wont enjoy blocking.

There are not many crowds or places in the country that have a better impact on the game than at Iowa State. The Cyclone fans are truly a sixth man. The place is so loud and always a fantastic crowd." - Former Kansas and current North Carolina head coach Roy Williams

It's going to take more than speed, IMO. There were a lot of teams with better speed than Navy but were still run over by them. Georgia Tech has themselves a tremendous football coach.

I think Johnson should convince Dr. Tom and Barry Switzer to join his staff so they can relive the glory days together

Re: Georgia Tech to run triple option

One word of caution would be the triple option takes discipline to run. more suited to the very disciplined kids going to the Naval Academy. It may work in GT, but it'll take a few years to get the right kids in.

Re: Georgia Tech to run triple option

I question whether or not it will be a true "triple option" attack, where the DE is left unblocked. If so, I definitely feel sorry for any QB at GT. Getting hammered by a 265 pounder all day won't feel good.

A disciplined defense with speed can shut down the option, especially when there's zero threat of a passing attack. If GT doesn't try to throw downfield at least once in a while, defenses will just start putting 8 guys in the box to stop it.

Also, what happens when you're down by 2 scores with about 5 minutes to play in the 4th? Just ask Nebraska fans how easy it is to score quickly with an option offense.

Not gonna work in that conference. He'll be run out of town in 4-5 years.

Not gonna work in that conference? Or not gonna work in this century? There's a reason why schools like Oklahoma and Nebraska no longer run it - it's because with scholarship limits in effect even schools from the Sun Belt Conference such as Troy and North Texas could shut it down. I don't think it'll even take 4-5 years if that's what he really plans on doing...

Note - on the other hand, it would appear that with Nebraska's "Order Restored" attitude that maybe they are going to be going back to something similar that "works" equally as well. Good luck with that one, cornholios...

Re: Georgia Tech to run triple option

It will work. I love the speed arguement. I think The Florida Gators had a TON of speed when they got killed by Nebraska in the National Championship game. If Georgia Tech can get a bunch of great lineman. A QB that can run the offense the right way and they execute it then they will be very good.
The reason it stopped working in Nebraska is because the coach could not recruit the position well enough for it to work. Nebraska made it to the National Title game with Osbourns QB and lineman. It was after they graduated that it failed to work. Once it was solich's guys with not as much talent it was dead.
Paul Johnson can flat out coach. In fact I would say he is as good of coach as any I have seen.

Re: Georgia Tech to run triple option

I'm active duty Navy and have enjoyed watching the Naval Academy be successful against the other service academies and other D1 schools while Paul Johnson was coach.
I live in ACC country and there have already been a few articles in local papers regarding how he was a bad hire...let's see. I wish he would have stayed at the USNA.

Re: Georgia Tech to run triple option

I don't know if he was a good hire or not. But with defenses getting smaller and quicker to counter the spread maybe a power running game is just what the doctor ordered. Maybe it will get stuffed.

Personally I think it will get stuffed and he'll be gone in four. But I could definitely be wrong.

Re: Georgia Tech to run triple option

Last time I checked Navy played a Division 1 schedule with ACC teams sprinkled in and Notre Dame every year. They lead the nation in rushing the past two years. Paul Johnson ran so much at Navy in part to shorten the game because of the talent differential - he might pass more at Georgia Tech.
He is a great coach...I'd bet Georgia Tech will average 300-350 ypg. rushing and pass for 140. He will have even more success at Tech because of a higher level of talent to work with.

Re: Georgia Tech to run triple option

I am actually more interested in seeing how his team is on defense. He will have bigger guys to work with and that should help his team keep the other team's scores lower then what he could do at Navy. Either way it was a gamble to talk him as coach, high risk/high reward, interesting to wait and see what happens.
