    ISU National Champions...it COULD happen

Most people don't think a program like Iowa State can ever win the National Championship in football. I DON'T agree. It has been done before and we are poised to have a chance. Here's what has to happen.
    1. Hire a coach that will bring his top recruits to Iowa State, so in essence there is a double recruiting year.
    2. Have a top shelf coaching staff
    3. Get the "luck" of the Big 12 schedule to work for you. That does happen for Iowa State
4, Get on a roll with a team and fan base believing it itself
I believe Jim Harbaugh is the man who has the best chance to fulfull all three of these needs. With someof his current players moving with him, his recruiting contacts and Iowa States base of players, he is set to take a team up the ladder.
Former Iowa State Coach Johnny Majors did this exact thing. He took the best of his recruiting class from Iowa State and put it together with the Pitt recruits and ended up winning the National Championship at a school that had been very medocre. Majors was an up and coming big time coach. So is Harbaugh.
So don't listen to the nay sayers that ISU can't get there. I for one am ready for a great ride.

If we ever win the national title, I will run up Welch that night, in the midst of the celebration, buck naked carrying the ISU flag...

One thing about Majors and Pitt. He gave out like 100 scholarships to Freshmen his first year there (no schollie limits). And so he had a HUGE talent pool to draw from.

Anything is possible. A good team and a favorable schedule can propel a team to a fantastic season (refer to 2002 Hawkeyes).

Re: ISU National Champions...it COULD happen

Can I get a puff of what you are smoking because it must be some REALLY good stuff! The biggest obstacle that ISU would have to even been in the hunt for the BCS championship game if all those factors came true and the planets aligned just right is the polls. Usually those who start the season high in the polls make the BCS championship game and ISU would have to have one heck of a team plus a pretty successful season before all this just to start out in or near the top 10 and maintain that throughout the season. The polls play a big factor in the BCS standings and there have been undefeated teams in the past not make the game because they couldn't get the votes in the polls to boost their BCS standings. ISU does not have enough credibility to get that and would just have to destroy everyone they played to creep into the top 5.

I would be going bonkers if we made the BCS title game some day but reality of it is you have to maintain a high level of success just to get into that elite group that is in the hunt nearly every year. That won't happen overnight. It's a lot easier in basketball because all you have to do is make the tourney and then anything can happen. In football you have to have a lot of non-game factors fall into place to get to that elite game.

One thing that was mentioned was the scheduling working in our favor...well, with the Big XII rotation, it would, in theory, be possible for us to have a monster season on a weak schedule, then follow it up with an undefeated season against that same weaker schedule, but maybe with a few tougher non-conference opponents.

This is not to say I think this will happen, but man, would it be cool if it did

If you would manage an undefeated season and a Big XII title, I could pretty much guarantee a BCS title game. Only caveat would be if there were two or more undefeateds from other BCS Conferences which wouldn't be too likely. And I'm not talking MAC, WAC or Big East or Conference USA.

While I love your Cyclone spirit and attitude, we're thousands of miles from national title aspirations.

We need a pilot first. Then, a bigger, better plane. After that, we gotta find some better passengers.

Re: ISU National Champions...it COULD happen

1st. With ISU being in the Big 12, it is possible to go to the BCS National Championship Game. It would probably have to involve an undefeated season and a win in the Big 12 Title Game. It would be unlikely that the polls would give ISU #2 with a loss unless the rest of the field is much weaker as well.

2nd. As ISUFan22 says, LONG way from a BCS National Championship. How about we hope to get to a bowl like the Cotton or Holiday, win, and then the next year maybe we can start to rumble about the outside chance of playing for a national title.

Yeah, I'd be pretty satisfied with a January bowl game.

If it happens, I highly doubt you guys would be the only ones doing that.

If it were to happen, I probably wouldn't make it to Welch as I'd be in Jail in Pheonix or Miami or whereever else the game would take place for having run naked on the field that night after the game.
